Chapter 3 — The Woman He Could Never Reach Again

One week later...

Nathan stood outside Sterling Manor.

Rain soaked his expensive suit.

The guards blocked the entrance.

"I just need five minutes."

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Mrs. Sterling refuses to see you."

Nathan looked toward the mansion.

Lights glowed through the enormous windows.

He remembered every time Evelyn had waited for him.

Every anniversary he forgot.

Every promise he broke.

Every tear she hid behind a smile.

The gates never opened.

Inside the mansion, Evelyn watched from the library balcony.

She didn't feel anger anymore.

Only peace.

Her assistant approached quietly.

"Mr. Brooks has been here for three hours."

Evelyn closed the book in her hands.

"Has he eaten?"

"No."

She nodded toward the kitchen.

"Send him dinner."

The assistant smiled.

"And invite him inside?"

Evelyn looked through the rain-covered glass.

"No."

"He is no longer my responsibility."

The food was delivered to the gate.

Nathan stared silently at the untouched meal.

For the first time, someone showed him kindness without offering him another chance.

He finally understood.

Forgiveness and reconciliation were not the same thing.

Months later...

Sterling Global announced its largest international acquisition in company history.

Evelyn appeared on magazine covers around the world.

Confident.

Independent.

Unstoppable.

Nathan quietly accepted a middle-management position at a small regional firm.

He spent years rebuilding a life founded on honesty instead of arrogance.

Their paths never crossed again.

Some people lose fortunes.

Others lose the one person who made those fortunes possible.

Nathan lost both.

And Evelyn discovered that the greatest revenge had never been destroying his empire.

It was proving she had never needed him to build her own.
