Chapter 2 — The Truth Everyone Ignored

Nathan refused to accept reality.

He blamed accountants.

Lawyers.

Investors.

Anyone except himself.

Then his father arrived.

Richard Brooks looked ten years older than he had only a week earlier.

He threw a thick folder onto the conference table.

"You idiot."

Nathan stared in confusion.

"What?"

Richard opened the first page.

Loan guarantees.

Investment agreements.

Acquisition records.

Every major expansion Brooks Holdings had celebrated over the past five years carried one hidden signature.

Sterling Capital.

Richard's hands shook.

"I warned you."

Nathan slowly looked up.

"What are you talking about?"

"You thought investors believed in you."

"They believed in Evelyn."

"You thought banks approved your loans."

"They trusted her name."

"You thought clients signed contracts because of your talent."

"They signed because she personally guaranteed every deal."

Nathan's mind raced.

Every promotion.

Every celebration.

Every award.

Every success.

They had never truly belonged to him.

Richard lowered his head.

"When you humiliated her..."

"You destroyed this family."

That afternoon, Camille packed her designer handbags.

"I didn't sign up to date a bankrupt man."

Nathan grabbed her wrist.

"You said you loved me."

She laughed.

"I loved your money."

She walked away without looking back.

For the first time in his life...

Nathan stood completely alone.
