Chapter 8: The Edited Video

Marian had kept the voicemail for fourteen years.

She had copied it onto a cassette after Charles Shaw ordered the original system erased. Fear had prevented her from coming forward, but Evelyn’s call after the conservatory incident had finally broken her silence.

They listened to the recording in Evelyn’s car.

Static filled the first few seconds.

Then Claire’s voice emerged, weak and breathless.

“Evelyn, the crash was not an accident. Grant wasn’t alone. Celeste has the bank key. Your signature is on everything, but I don’t think you signed it.”

A sound like a door closing echoed in the background.

Claire continued.

“The land records matter. Find the original deed. Don’t trust Charles. And if Nora is listening someday, tell her the little house still belongs to her.”

The message ended with a sharp noise.

Then silence.

Nora sat motionless.

“My mother knew she was being hunted.”

Evelyn’s eyes glistened, but no tears fell.

“And I allowed Charles to convince me the message was fraudulent.”

“You buried it.”

“I did.”

Denise turned from the passenger seat.

“Why keep Marian on the payroll if she knew?”

“Charles threatened her son,” Evelyn said. “After his death, I gave her a pension and began searching privately for the recording.”

Nora looked at her.

“You knew it existed?”

“I suspected.”

“But you did not tell the police.”

“I no longer knew which police officers Charles had influenced.”

Nora opened the car door.

“I need air.”

Her phone vibrated before she could step out.

Dozens of notifications filled the screen.

A video of the conservatory incident had been posted online.

The clip began after the champagne bucket fell. It showed Nora shouting at Grant, though she remembered speaking only once. The audio had been rearranged to make it appear that she demanded money.

The video ended with Grant calmly restraining her while she supposedly threatened the foundation.

A caption identified Nora as a disgruntled employee under investigation for financial theft.

Within twenty minutes, the video had been shared thousands of times.

Nora’s name, photograph, workplace, and neighborhood were already public.

Grant had created his version of events before she could tell the truth.

Evelyn’s phone rang.

Peter Lowell was calling from Shawbridge.

“The board has scheduled an emergency meeting tomorrow morning,” he said. “The Mercers are requesting your removal as chair.”

“On what grounds?”

“Mismanagement, reputational harm, and mental incapacity.”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

Peter continued.

“There is another issue. Three major donors have suspended their gifts after seeing the video.”

Nora stared at the passing city lights.

Grant was not simply defending himself.

He was trying to destroy Shawbridge before Evelyn could expose him.

Then Nora received a text from an unknown number.

Your mother left evidence with me. Come alone if you want the truth.

A second message appeared.

It contained the sender’s name.

Arthur Vale.

Evelyn looked at the screen and went pale.

“That is impossible,” she said.

“Why?”

“Arthur Vale was the Mercer family’s driver.”

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“He died thirteen years ago.”
