Chapter 12: The Account in Evelyn’s Name

The board suspended Evelyn immediately.

She surrendered her office keys without protest.

News crews gathered outside Shawbridge as reporters announced that both of the foundation’s most powerful families were connected to the missing money.

Nora stood with Evelyn inside the empty conservatory.

The overturned champagne bucket had been removed, but a pale water stain remained beneath the table.

“Did you take the money?” Nora asked.

“No.”

“Did you know the account existed?”

“No.”

“Your authorization appears on every transfer.”

“My electronic signature was controlled by Peter and Charles.”

“Charles has been dead for seven years.”

“The transfers began before his death.”

“And continued afterward.”

Evelyn looked toward the chandeliers.

“Then Peter continued the system.”

Nora wanted to believe her.

That frightened her.

Peter was questioned for six hours.

He finally admitted using Evelyn’s electronic signature, but he denied creating the account.

“Charles opened it,” Peter said in the recorded interview. “Celeste maintained it. Grant moved the funds.”

“Why use Evelyn’s name?” the investigator asked.

“Insurance.”

“Against what?”

“Against her conscience.”

The money had not remained in the account. It had been transferred through property companies, consulting firms, and political organizations.

One recipient appeared repeatedly.

Bellweather Development—the company tied to Nora’s land trust.

Someone had been using stolen charitable funds to pay taxes, legal fees, and maintenance costs on property that legally belonged to Nora.

The arrangement made Nora appear to be a beneficiary of the fraud.

Grant’s attorneys moved quickly.

They accused Claire of creating the system and claimed Nora had returned to Shawbridge to reclaim hidden assets.

The public narrative shifted again.

Nora was no longer merely an angry employee.

She was being described as the daughter of the alleged architect of a multimillion-dollar charity scheme.

That evening, someone painted the word THIEF across the door of her apartment.

Nora stayed with Denise, who had been released from the hospital.

At midnight, Evelyn arrived carrying a sealed envelope.

“What is that?” Nora asked.

“A confession.”

“From Peter?”

“From Charles.”

Evelyn placed it on the table.

“I found it after his death. I hid it because I was afraid of what it would do to the foundation.”

Nora did not touch the envelope.

“You let my mother carry the blame.”

“Yes.”

The honesty struck harder than denial.

“Why give it to me now?”

“Because protecting Shawbridge has become another way of protecting the people who corrupted it.”

Before Nora could open the letter, Denise’s television interrupted with breaking news.

Peter Lowell had been attacked while being transported to federal custody.

His vehicle had overturned on an access road.

Peter survived long enough to speak to a paramedic.

His final recorded words were released less than an hour later.

“Grant did not give the order,” Peter whispered.

The paramedic asked which order he meant.

Peter’s answer was barely audible.

“The order to silence Claire came from Charles Shaw.”
