Chapter 11: The Locked Archive
Nora and Evelyn returned to Shawbridge with two police detectives.
The emergency board meeting was less than an hour away.
Denise’s phone was found outside the basement records archive. The screen was cracked, and a smear of blood marked the edge.
The archive door had been locked from the inside.
Police forced it open.
Denise was lying beside a collapsed shelving unit. She was conscious but disoriented. A cut above her eyebrow had soaked one side of her blouse.
Peter Lowell was gone.
“He took three boxes,” Denise said as paramedics treated her. “Old bank records and Charles Shaw’s private correspondence.”
“Did he say where he was going?” Nora asked.
“He kept repeating that Grant had promised to protect him.”
A maintenance tunnel connected the archive to the conservatory loading dock. Peter had escaped through it minutes before police arrived.
The emergency board meeting began at nine.
Grant attended by video from his attorney’s office. Celeste sat beside him. Both denied any involvement in Claire’s crash, Nora’s surveillance, or the attack on Denise.
Peter’s disappearance was presented as evidence of an independent fraud scheme.
“Mr. Lowell manipulated all of us,” Grant told the board. “Including my family.”
Nora watched from the back of the room.
Evelyn stood at the head of the table.
“Then you will support a full forensic audit.”
Grant paused.
“Of course.”
“And the suspension of every Mercer representative until the audit is complete?”
“That would be unnecessary.”
“Why?”
“Because our funding is holding this institution together.”
Nora stepped forward.
“Not if the land lease is terminated.”
Grant’s face changed.
Nora placed the deed on the table.
Board members began reading.
Celeste leaned toward the camera.
“That trust is invalid.”
“Then you already knew about it,” Nora said.
Celeste realized her mistake.
The board voted to suspend Grant and Celeste from all foundation activities pending investigation.
By noon, federal agents had joined the inquiry.
At 12:36, they traced Peter’s phone to a private airfield north of Boston.
Police stopped his car before it reached the runway.
Inside the trunk were the missing records.
Peter agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.
His first statement identified Grant and Celeste as participants in the financial scheme.
His second statement implicated Charles Shaw.
His third produced the most damaging evidence of all.
A Mercer-controlled shell company had diverted scholarship funds into an account opened under Evelyn’s legal name.
