Chapter 2 — The Truth Hidden in Plain Sight

Forty-five minutes later...
The ballroom's enormous projection screen flickered to life.
Most guests had remained.
Curiosity had replaced celebration.
The wedding cake stood untouched.
The champagne had gone flat.
Officer Harris folded his arms.
"Play it."
Camera One showed the reception from above.
Guests laughing.
Children dancing.
Nothing unusual.
Camera Two overlooked the head table.
Preston stood near his chair.
His titanium phone rested beside a champagne glass.
Then...
He looked around.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Checking who was watching.
He slipped the phone into his jacket.
Walked casually across the ballroom.
Stopped beside Sophie's chair while Evelyn spoke with another guest.
In one smooth motion...
He reached toward the tiny denim jacket hanging behind her seat.
His hand disappeared into the pocket.
Then he walked away.
Seconds later...
He pretended to search frantically.
"My phone!"
The recording continued.
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Someone whispered,
"Oh my God..."
Camera Three showed something even worse.
After pulling the phone from Sophie's jacket...
Preston glanced toward his parents.
His mother gave the smallest nod.
Not surprise.
Approval.
Then came Camera Four.
The menu board.
The attack.
There was no struggle.
No threat.
No self-defense.
Only a grown man lifting a heavy oak board...
...and striking an eight-year-old child.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavier than before.

Officer Harris looked at Preston.
"You're under arrest."
