Chapter 1 — The Footage No One Expected

The distant wail of sirens grew louder until flashing red and blue lights spilled through the ballroom's towering glass windows.

Only then did the silence finally break.

Several guests hurried backward.

Others reached for their phones.

A few whispered that the child needed help.

The paramedics rushed inside first.

Within seconds they were kneeling beside Sophie.

One carefully cleaned the blood from her forehead while another checked her pupils with a small flashlight.

"Possible concussion," he said quietly.

"We're taking her to the hospital immediately."

Evelyn never loosened her grip on her daughter.

Not once.

Behind them, Preston straightened his tuxedo as if nothing unusual had happened.

"It was an accident," he announced loudly.

"She attacked me after stealing my phone."

His mother nodded immediately.

"I saw everything."

"So did I," Richard added.

"Our granddaughter became violent when Preston confronted her."

The lies arrived almost effortlessly.

Years of protecting their favorite son had made deception second nature.

A police officer stepped forward.

"I'm Officer Daniel Harris."

"I'll need statements from everyone involved."

Preston smiled confidently.

"My phone disappeared."

"We found it inside the little girl's jacket."

"The entire ballroom witnessed it."

Several guests reluctantly nodded.

Not because they believed him...

Because they had only seen the phone emerge from Sophie's pocket.

No one had seen how it got there.

Officer Harris turned toward Evelyn.

She spoke only one sentence.

"I'd like you to preserve every second of this hotel's security footage."

Preston's smile vanished for barely half a heartbeat.

Then it returned.

"The cameras don't cover every angle," he replied casually.

"You won't find anything."

Before anyone could answer...

A calm voice interrupted.

"Actually..."

Everyone turned.

The hotel's general manager was walking toward them.

Gray suit.

Tablet in hand.

Professional expression.

"Our ballroom security system records continuously from four synchronized cameras."

He looked directly at the police officer.

"And none of the footage can be deleted without corporate authorization."

For the first time that evening...

Preston stopped smiling.
