Chapter 3 — The Family Sophie Deserved

One year later...
The scar above Sophie's eyebrow had faded.
But the lesson never would.
Our lives became unexpectedly peaceful after cutting every tie with my parents.
No more manipulation.
No more favoritism.
No more pretending that cruelty was love.
Preston pleaded guilty to child abuse, filing a false police report, and evidence tampering.
He received a prison sentence.
The judge looked directly at him before announcing it.
"A child trusted her family."
"You used that trust as a weapon."
My parents sat alone in the courtroom.
Neither of them looked at me.
Neither of them looked at Sophie.
Because they knew they had already lost us forever.
Months later, Sophie asked me a question while we were planting flowers in our backyard.
"Mommy..."
"Why didn't Grandma love me?"
I knelt beside her.
Brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
And smiled.
"She forgot what love looks like."
"But that was never your fault."
Sophie smiled back.
Then hugged me tightly.
That hug healed more than any apology ever could.
As we walked back into our little home...
I realized something.
Blood doesn't make a family.
Love does.
And the day I stopped begging wolves to love us...
...was the day my daughter and I finally became free.
The End.
