Chapter 1 — The Footage They Never Wanted Anyone to See

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Sophie squeezed my hand as the paramedics cleaned the blood from her forehead.

"It hurts, Mommy..."

"I know, sweetheart."

Outside the ballroom, two police officers stopped Preston before he could leave.

He smiled confidently.

"It was an accident."

"My niece attacked me after she was caught stealing."

My parents immediately stepped forward.

"We saw everything," my mother lied.

"Our granddaughter became violent."

I stared at them in disbelief.

Even now...

They chose him.

Not the bleeding child.

Then the hotel manager arrived.

His face was pale.

"Officer..."

"Our security department has already secured the ballroom footage."

For the first time...

Preston stopped smiling.

Twenty minutes later, everyone crowded into the hotel's conference room.

The video began.

Crystal-clear.

Every second.

Every angle.

It showed Preston removing his phone during dinner.

Looking around.

Walking quietly behind Sophie's chair while everyone watched the bride's speech.

Then...

He slipped the phone into the pocket of her little denim jacket.

Gasps filled the room.

The video continued.

It showed him pretending to search.

Accusing an eight-year-old child.

Then grabbing the heavy oak menu board...

And striking Sophie across the head.

No one spoke.

The silence was deafening.

My father's face turned white.

My mother's hands began to shake.

Preston whispered only one word.

"...Impossible."

But the camera never lied.

The officers turned toward him.

"Sir..."

"You're under arrest."

As the handcuffs clicked around his wrists...

His perfect wedding ended.

Not with applause.

But with flashing police lights.
