Chapter 3: Family Divided

News spread through the family within twenty-four hours.
Phones rang nonstop.
Some relatives defended Sarah.
"She made a mistake."
Others were horrified.
"A mistake lasts seconds."
"This lasted hours."
Matthew overheard every conversation.
Late that night, he quietly walked into his mother's bedroom.
"Mom..."
Sarah looked up hopefully.
"I didn't know Noah was really sick."
"I know," she answered.
Matthew's eyes filled with tears.
"But you wouldn't let him call Uncle Michael."
Sarah couldn't answer.
Her own son slowly backed out of the room.
For the first time in his life...
Matthew was afraid of his mother.
Meanwhile, Noah slowly recovered in the hospital.
He finally asked the question everyone feared.
"Did Aunt Sarah not want me there anymore?"
Emily looked away.
Michael gently held his son's hand.

"You didn't do anything wrong, buddy."
