Chapter 1: The Ambulance Ride

Michael dropped to his knees the moment he reached Noah.

The basement floor was freezing. The little boy's skin felt colder than it should. His green jacket was damp, and a sour smell clung to his clothes. Beside him lay a small puddle where he had been sick.

"Noah... buddy, I'm here."

The boy's eyelids fluttered.

"Dad..."

That single word shattered whatever control Michael still had.

Emily rushed down the stairs, wrapping her trembling arms around Noah as carefully as she could. Sarah remained frozen at the top of the staircase, unable to step closer.

Michael pulled out his phone.

"911. My eight-year-old son has been locked in a basement for hours. He's conscious, but barely."

Within minutes, flashing lights filled the quiet neighborhood.

Paramedics covered Noah with heated blankets while checking his temperature and oxygen level.

"What happened?" one medic asked.

Michael looked directly at Sarah.

"My sister locked him down there."

The silence that followed felt heavier than any accusation.

Sarah finally whispered, "I only wanted him to calm down."

The paramedic looked at her with disbelief.

"You left a sick child alone?"

Sarah opened her mouth, but no words came out.

As the ambulance doors closed, Noah reached weakly for his father's hand.

"You came..."

May you like

Michael squeezed his tiny fingers.

"I'll always come."
