Chapter 7 - The Archive That Remembered

The archive had been shut down after Vanguard dissolved.
Nobody expected its local storage system to work.
Bishop found it in a government equipment depot waiting to be destroyed.
A judge authorized a supervised forensic examination.
The drive was damaged, but a specialist recovered fragments of a mission folder labeled ATLAS.
My voice appeared in one of the recordings.
"Transfer all protected civilians before first light."
Then Nathan's voice answered.
"Consider it done, Commander."
I remembered the day.
I remembered believing the operation had succeeded.
The next recovered file was a photograph of a detention room.
Behind the wire mesh stood a woman named Farah Rahimi, an interpreter who had once saved my team.
The date on the photograph was six months after she had supposedly been relocated to safety.
I looked away.
Ruiz didn't let me.
"You need to identify her."
"Farah Rahimi. She had two sons."
"Did you ever verify her arrival?"
"Nathan told me it was classified."
I heard the weakness in my own answer.
The man I considered my brother had used my obedience to secrecy as his shield.
A second recording captured an unfamiliar executive discussing contracts and 'identity stabilization.'
Daniel identified the speaker as Northbridge founder Walter Kessler.
Kessler had died in prison seven years earlier.
His conviction involved securities fraud, not disappearances.
When Ruiz checked the prison records, she found he had received visits from a lawyer employed by Caldwell Private Banking.
Nora called on video that evening.
She couldn't speak clearly, but she could point to words on a board.
YOU PROMISED TO COME HOME.
"I will," I said.
She pointed again.
DON'T BECOME HIM.
I sat with that sentence after the screen went dark.
She knew anger had pushed me toward the old part of myself.
She was telling me what Rachel had written eighteen years earlier.
Tell the truth.
Don't surrender yourself to vengeance.
Just before midnight the forensic team recovered one more file.
It contained a list of authorized users who had accessed ATLAS after Vanguard closed.
Nathan's credentials were present.
So were Daniel's.
And beside the final entry was a name that made Ruiz swear.
May you like
Elena Ruiz.
