Chapter 14 - The Passenger

Her name was Leila Rahimi.
Farah had believed her younger sister dead for years.
Instead Leila had lived under identities provided by Northbridge, moving wherever Nathan ordered.
She was the woman who had helped Nora retrieve the decoy drive.
She was also the woman who had sat beside Rachel in the car on the night of the crash.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?" I asked.
Leila looked at Farah.
"Because I was the reason they found her."
She explained that Rachel had planned to meet a federal investigator that night.
Leila was carrying copies of the banking files.
A Northbridge driver followed them.
Their car was forced off the road after someone interfered with the brakes.
Leila survived because Rachel pushed her toward the passenger door before the vehicle hit the barrier.
"I thought she was trying to save herself," Leila said.
"She was saving the evidence."
Leila had escaped with the files but lived in fear that Northbridge would kill Farah if she surfaced.
The message from Nathan had forced her back into the open.
She handed Vale a recording of the final minutes before the crash.
Rachel's voice was shaky but clear.
"David must not sign the purge. Everything depends on who asks him."
A second voice came through the speakers.
Nathan.
He was on the phone with Rachel.
"Pull over and give me the ledger," he ordered.
Rachel refused.
Then she said something that shattered the story I had told myself for years.
"David already knows what your organization did, Nathan. He just doesn't know he was made to authorize it."
I had signed the first transfer.
I remembered it.
A routine logistics authorization among hundreds.
Nathan had attached hidden identity records behind the visible file.
My signature had allowed the first Northbridge disappearances to proceed.
I hadn't understood what I was signing.
But people had suffered under my name.
I thought of Farah's photograph of her sons.
I thought of Rachel dying while trying to make the truth visible.
The shame nearly overwhelmed me.
Vale put a hand on the table.
"You can be a witness to your own mistakes," he said.
"You don't have to repeat them."
Leila turned to leave.
Farah caught her hand.
For the first time in years the sisters stood together without running.
Then an alarm sounded through Vale's headset.
His officers had located Maya and Preston.
The holding site was in a different state.

And the building had just begun to burn.
