Chapter 17 - The False Victory

Vale warned me that cooperation would not guarantee immunity.
"If your signature helped establish Northbridge, investigators have to examine your role," he said.
"Then examine it."
My lawyer explained the risks.
I listened and gave a sworn statement anyway.
I described every form I had signed, every order I recalled, and every moment I had trusted Nathan without verification.
The review found that I had authorized a legitimate relocation operation but that hidden attachments were added after my approval.
It did not erase my failure to follow up on the families.
I said so publicly when reporters asked.
Then the prosecutor announced the four students had been indicted on felony assault and conspiracy charges.
For a moment we believed the case had crossed a line no family name could undo.
Nora looked almost hopeful when the news appeared on her screen.
Chad's bail hearing was scheduled for Friday.
Preston offered to testify under a cooperation agreement.
Maya was recovering and had identified the contractor.
The families' lawyers still had influence, but they could no longer dictate the entire record.
Then Chad's attorney played an edited recording in court.
It sounded as though Nora had threatened to expose the families unless they paid her.
The clip came from a conversation in the library the week before the assault.
The attorney portrayed her as an extortionist.
Cameras captured the judge asking the prosecutor to explain the recording.
The internet erupted before the hearing was even over.
Nora watched strangers call her a liar.
Her hands shook so violently she dropped the tablet.
I wanted to smash every screen in the house.
Instead we worked with her advocate to find the original conversation.
The library's server contained the full audio.
Nora had said she would report evidence of wrongdoing unless the university acted.
She had never asked for money.
The defense had removed the words that changed the meaning.
Vale disclosed the complete recording and requested sanctions.
The judge ordered an evidentiary hearing.
But the damage was already moving faster than the correction.
Nora wrote, THEY GET TO HURT ME AGAIN WITHOUT TOUCHING ME.
I had no answer big enough to repair that.
That evening a courier delivered an envelope to our home.
Inside was Rachel's wedding ring.
I had buried it with her.
Underneath was a note in Nathan's handwriting.
