Chapter 9 - Fire in the Archive Wing

The alarm filled the house with an ugly mechanical rhythm.

Security staff guided guests outside while the local fire department responded.

I did not follow Daniel into a dangerous room.

The estate's archive wing was already filling with smoke.

From the courtyard I watched firefighters move through the entrance in protective equipment.

Caroline stood beside me, shivering beneath a borrowed coat.

“He always runs toward the thing he thinks makes him important,” she said.

I could not tell whether she meant the safe or his father's memory.

Daniel emerged coughing, supported by an officer.

He carried an empty metal document case.

“The safe was open,” he said.

“Someone got there first.”

The fire marshal later determined the ignition point was near a damaged electrical cabinet.

The cause remained under investigation.

No one treated it as proof of arson simply because it was convenient to the plot.

But the security logs showed a maintenance badge used minutes before the fire.

The badge belonged to a contractor who had died two months earlier.

Marlowe asked Margaret who controlled the estate's old access roster.

“Patrick,” she said.

That evening, Daniel agreed to speak with investigators voluntarily in the presence of counsel.

He handed over the empty case and gave a complete timeline of his movements.

It was the first responsible choice I had seen him make since I arrived.

It did not last.

When his attorney informed him that his command had opened an administrative inquiry, Daniel accused me of destroying his career.

“You brought the children here to humiliate me.”

“I brought them because you invited me to meet your family.”

“You knew what would happen.”

“I knew the truth would exist whether you looked at it or not.”

He went quiet.

Then he asked whether Noah liked baseball.

The question was so painfully ordinary that it cut through the argument.

“He likes astronomy,” I answered.

“Ethan likes baseball.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Right.”

“You don't know them.”

“I'd like to.”

“Then learn how to put their needs ahead of your pride.”

That night Marlowe informed me Patrick had vanished from supervised lodging after contacting his lawyer.

His belongings were still there.

His phone lay on the bed.

A note beside it said that the ledgers he surrendered were incomplete.

Under the note was a map of an abandoned training facility in southern Colorado.

A circle marked the underground communications room.

Along the margin were four words.
