Chapter 15 - The Flight Manifest

Daniel denied ever boarding the aircraft.

The manifest was not a boarding pass, and the flight's actual passenger list might have changed.

I reminded myself of that as I looked at the document.

Then investigators found a fuel receipt signed with Daniel's military identification number.

He said the number could have been copied.

His old duty records placed him at a training exercise hundreds of miles away.

Marlowe ordered those records independently verified.

The possibility that Daniel had lied about my father shook the last comfortable certainty I held about him.

Daniel agreed to a recorded interview without me present.

Through his attorney he produced travel receipts and a photograph from the exercise.

The metadata supported his account.

Further checks established the fuel signature was a later digital insertion.

Someone had constructed a trail pointing toward him.

I hated the relief I felt.

Daniel deserved consequences for abandoning the children.

He did not deserve to be blamed for crimes he had not committed.

The distinction was easy to say and hard to feel.

Then Evelyn Price traveled to Texas.

She sat at my kitchen table with a battered portfolio.

“Your father wanted to expose a machine that moved money through charities,” she said.

“He knew they would make the case about personalities if they could.”

From her portfolio she produced a notarized inventory of documents Marcus had entrusted to her.

The inventory referred to a microfilm strip hidden inside a child's keepsake.

I stared at her.

“A keepsake?”

“Something you carried when you were young.”

I searched the cedar chest again.

At the bottom lay a small silver music box.

I turned its key.

The old tune barely played.

Behind the felt lining was a narrow metal compartment.

Inside was the strip.

We preserved it rather than examining it with household equipment.

A forensic specialist later reported that it contained copies of offshore bank authorization records and a list of intermediary companies.

One company was owned by Thomas Vale.

Another belonged to Halden.

A third was linked to a holding trust administered by Margaret.

The records also documented an internal objection signed by Arthur Reynolds before his death.

They showed that Marcus had planned to testify.

The remaining question was why he had never reached the hearing.

A fresh review of his fatal accident found a maintenance discrepancy in the vehicle records.

That discrepancy was not yet proof of sabotage.

But it justified reopening portions of the investigation.

That night, the children's school sent an emergency message.

Someone had attempted to remove Sophia from an after-school program using a forged authorization bearing my name.

The staff had refused.

Security had stopped the person at the door.

The name on the visitor's badge was Caroline Vale.
