FOUR CHILDREN AT CHRISTMAS / Chapter 16 / 20

Chapter 16 - Caroline at the School Gate

Caroline was in Colorado when the impostor approached the school.

Video confirmed it within minutes.

The person had used a counterfeit identification card and a photograph scraped from Caroline's public profile.

The school followed its safety plan, and Sophia never left the supervised room.

I thanked the staff until my voice broke.

Then I went home and held all four children so tightly that Olivia asked whether I was cold.

Caroline called me herself.

“My father did this,” she whispered.

“Do you know that?”

“I know he threatened to take away everything if I kept talking.”

“Tell the investigators exactly what he said.”

She did.

Marlowe's team pursued warrants and safety measures through the proper channels.

Within days, authorities searched premises associated with Vale's security company.

They found documents used to impersonate multiple witnesses, including me and Caroline.

A technician recovered fragments of a spreadsheet identifying people who might pressure key witnesses.

Beside my children's names were school addresses and family routines.

The discovery became a crucial part of the prosecution's evidence.

I struggled with a private truth.

I had spent years training myself to confront danger.

Nothing had prepared me for the helplessness of knowing someone had studied my children's lives like entries in a file.

Maya reminded me that fear could not become the rule of our home.

We changed routines, reinforced school protocols, and let the children continue being children as much as possible.

Daniel requested permission to fund additional security.

I allowed a transparent contribution administered by counsel rather than accepting an arrangement he could later use for control.

He did not argue.

That mattered more than the amount.

Margaret sold a valuable collection of jewelry to reimburse part of the foundation's documented losses.

Her voluntary cooperation did not erase possible liability.

She said she understood.

Patrick supplied the final access codes for the recovered server files.

The new records showed Halden had scheduled an enormous transfer for New Year's Eve.

If completed, it would empty accounts intended to compensate veterans who had been denied care.

Marlowe worked with financial authorities to seek restraints on the suspicious funds.

The transfer instructions were paused for review.

Yet the person controlling the account immediately attempted a second transfer through a different institution.

That attempt carried an electronic approval attributed to my department.

My name appeared at the bottom.

I was being used again.

Then an independent audit of the signature showed the approval had been generated from a device registered to someone inside the investigative task force.

The registered owner was Special Investigator Jonah Pike.

Pike was suspended from access while the device was examined.

He insisted his credentials had been stolen.

I had heard that explanation too many times to embrace or reject it without evidence.

Marlowe requested a separate team to review the breach so the inquiry into her own unit would remain credible.

A hardware examination found a hidden remote-access service installed through a contractor update.

The installation had occurred weeks before the Christmas gathering.

Logs showed someone outside Pike's office had used the device at the relevant time.

Pike's account was consistent with the evidence.

He was not immediately restored to full duties, but the suspicion against him began to narrow.

The remote service connected through infrastructure rented by one of Vale's shell companies.

That link gave investigators a new route through the maze of transfers.

I attended a closed briefing as a cooperating witness, careful not to act as an investigator in my own personal case.

The financial specialist explained the scheme without theatrics.

Grant money had entered legitimate charitable accounts.

Forged invoices had moved it to businesses that delivered little or no service.

From there, consultants and intermediaries had concealed its destination.

The children's identities had been used to create distracting beneficiary names and to threaten me if I approached the truth.

Daniel's rank, Margaret's social position, and Arthur's legacy had served as credibility shields.

None of that required Daniel to understand the full fraud.

It did require him to sign documents he had a duty to read.

His career might not survive that negligence even if the criminal allegations against him failed.

He asked to meet me outside the hearing room.

“I used to think being a colonel made me a good man.”

“It made you a colonel.”

He accepted the correction.

“I'm going to tell my command everything.”

“Start with what you did to us.”

He nodded.

I noticed how exhausted he looked.

I did not offer him consolation.

My sympathy belonged first to the children he had left and the veterans whose benefits had vanished.

At midnight, Marlowe called with another development.

Thomas Vale had disappeared from his residence before a scheduled interview.

His private plane was still in its hangar.

His phone had been recovered in a drawer.

A camera recorded him leaving in a maintenance van with an unidentified passenger.

The passenger's face was hidden.

But the jacket matched one worn by Victor Halden that morning.

The two men appeared to be moving together.

Hours later, a sealed statement arrived at my attorney's office.

It was signed by Thomas Vale.

It accused Margaret Reynolds of masterminding everything.

Attached was a bank instruction supposedly bearing my father's signature.

The instruction was dated eleven years after his death.
