Chapter 2: The Calls That Changed Everything

No one in the ballroom moved.

The music had stopped.

Champagne glasses remained suspended halfway to lips as every eye shifted between Adrian Cole and Evelyn Hart.

Vanessa folded her arms with a smug smile.

"You really expect anyone to believe you can freeze Adrian's accounts?" she scoffed.

Arthur Bennett never looked at her.

Instead, he quietly removed a secure phone from his jacket and placed a single call.

"Proceed."

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Ten seconds later, Adrian's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and frowned.

His private banker.

He answered with irritation.

"This isn't a good—"

The voice on the other end cut him off.

"Mr. Cole, every corporate account under your authorization has been suspended pending ownership verification."

Adrian laughed.

"There must be some mistake."

"I'm afraid there isn't."

The line went dead.

Before he could process it, another call arrived.

His attorney.

Then another.

His Chief Financial Officer.

Then three members of the board.

Each conversation became worse than the last.

"The voting rights have changed."

"The ownership documents were activated."

"You've lost executive authority."

"The board is requesting your immediate resignation."

For the first time in years...

Adrian's confident smile disappeared.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

"Tell them to fix it."

He couldn't.

Because no one was listening to him anymore.

Across the ballroom, Evelyn calmly accepted a fresh glass of sparkling water.

She never even looked his way.

Finally Adrian walked toward her.

"What game are you playing?"

Evelyn met his eyes.

"This isn't a game."

"It's an audit."

Arthur quietly placed a thick leather folder onto the ballroom table.

May you like

Inside were documents carrying signatures older than Adrian's entire career.

Adrian's hands began to shake.
