Chapter 5 - THE MISSING FORTY-SEVEN MINUTES

Vincent replayed the sentence three times.

He got you to sign it yourself.

Each repetition sounded less possible and more familiar.

A memory began pressing against the edge of his mind.

A stack of documents in his study.

Rain against the windows.

Charles standing beside the desk with yellow tabs marking signature lines.

Vincent had been leaving for a meeting in Manhattan.

He remembered being impatient.

He remembered Sofia asking from the doorway whether he had read everything.

He remembered joking that Bellamy was paid too much money for him to read every page himself.

Then he remembered Sofia not laughing.

Vincent sat back down slowly.

Grace watched him.

"You remember."

"I remember signing a security restructuring package."

Dominic leaned against the table.

"When?"

"Four days before Sofia disappeared."

"What was it supposed to cover?"

"Emergency authority if there was an attack on the estate."

Marco frowned.

"That was when we were getting threats from the Carbone crew."

Vincent nodded.

"Charles said the family needed temporary medical and legal authority if I was injured."

Isabella spoke quietly.

"And somewhere inside those papers was an authorization against Sofia."

Vincent looked toward the library doors.

"Yes."

Grace's expression hardened.

"Then he planned her disappearance before she disappeared."

Nobody contradicted her.

Marco began copying the memory card into two encrypted drives.

"There is more video."

Vincent looked at the laptop.

"Play it."

Sofia appeared again.

"I copied the authorizations, but I could not take them without alerting Bellamy."

She lifted a folded sheet toward the camera.

"The transfer facility is listed only by code."

She held the paper closer.

A typed line became visible.

FACILITY 17 - NORTH PROGRAM.

"Daniel Carter thinks the code appears in old property invoices."

Grace made a sound in her throat.

Emily looked up at her.

"Dad helped her."

Grace nodded slowly.

Tears gathered in her eyes this time.

"He never told me."

Sofia continued.

"Daniel says someone has been deleting camera footage from the estate archive."

Marco turned toward Vincent.

"I want the old server pulled now."

Vincent nodded.

"Do it."

Marco spoke into his radio.

Sofia's video continued.

"The missing sections always happen after Bellamy visits."

She paused.

"The longest gap was forty-seven minutes."

Marco stopped speaking into the radio.

His face changed.

"What?" Vincent asked.

"The night Sofia disappeared, the official report lists a forty-seven-minute camera malfunction."

Vincent stared at him.

"You told me the storm knocked out the rear system."

"That is what the diagnostic report said."

"Who gave you the report?"

Marco already knew the answer.

"Bellamy's technology consultant."

Dominic laughed bitterly.

"Charles handled every door we were supposed to open."

Vincent pointed toward the screen.

"Finish the video."

Sofia leaned closer to the camera.

"If I vanish, do not assume the missing footage is gone."

Her expression changed almost imperceptibly.

"Daniel found a maintenance mirror."

The video ended.

Marco frowned.

"A maintenance mirror?"

Vincent looked at him.

"Backup server."

"We did not have one."

"Not officially."

Dominic nodded toward Grace.

"Daniel worked electrical maintenance before he became grounds supervisor."

Grace looked confused.

"He used to complain that the estate security system had no redundancy."

Marco stood.

"If he built an unauthorized mirror, it would have needed power and network access."

"Where?" Vincent asked.

Marco thought.

"Somewhere old enough that nobody checks it."

Emily, who had been listening with both hands wrapped around a cup of water, raised one finger.

The adults looked at her.

"What?" Grace asked.

"Dad hated the attic."

Marco blinked.

"That is helpful, Emily, but there are six attics in this house."

"No."

She shook her head.

"He hated the little attic over the laundry room because he said it was too hot and full of wires."

Grace stared at her daughter.

"How do you remember these things?"

Emily looked offended again.

"Because everybody always talked around me."

Vincent almost smiled.

"Marco."

"Already going."

He took two guards and left.

Vincent turned toward the library.

"Bring Charles back."

Grace's shoulders stiffened.

"Why?"

"Because I want to see his face when I ask about Facility 17."

Two guards returned with Charles between them.

He had removed his tie.

Otherwise, he looked irritatingly composed.

"Are we finished with the theater?"

Vincent held up the frozen video image showing Sofia's face.

Charles's eyes moved to the laptop for less than a second.

It was enough.

"Facility 17," Vincent said.

Charles gave no reaction.

"I have no idea what you mean."

"North Program."

Charles looked at him calmly.

"Still nothing."

Vincent leaned forward.

"You prepared psychiatric transfer papers for my wife before she disappeared."

"That is a serious accusation."

"It is a statement."

"Based on a frightened woman's private recording made during an obvious period of emotional distress."

Grace stepped forward.

"You really cannot stop using that word, can you?"

Charles ignored her.

"Vincent, you are upset."

"Do not diagnose me too."

Dominic looked away to hide a grim smile.

Charles continued.

"If Sofia found draft emergency documents, there were many reasons they might exist."

"With my signature?"

For the first time, Charles hesitated.

"If your signature appears, then you signed them."

Vincent's eyes turned flat.

"That is exactly what she said."

Charles spread his hands.

"Then perhaps she understood more than you are giving her credit for."

A radio crackled at the door.

Marco's voice came through.

"Vincent, we found something."

Vincent kept looking at Charles.

"Bring it."

Five minutes later, Marco returned carrying a dusty black metal box the size of a thick book.

Two wires still trailed from the back.

"Daniel mounted this behind an old ventilation grate above the laundry room."

Grace covered her mouth.

"Does it work?"

"It powered on."

Marco placed a small drive on the table.

"And it has camera archives from the week Sofia disappeared."

Charles's face finally changed.

Not much.

But enough.

Vincent saw it.

"Forty-seven minutes," he said.

Marco nodded.

"We have them."

The ballroom doors were locked again.

Only Vincent, Grace, Emily, Dominic, Isabella, Marco, Charles, and two guards remained inside.

The guests had been moved to the west wing under supervision.

Marco connected Daniel's mirrored archive to the isolated laptop.

The first recovered camera showed the rear corridor at 10:31 p.m.

Sofia appeared carrying a dark coat and a leather folder.

At 10:33, she entered the laundry room.

Grace inhaled.

"That is when she gave me the phone."

At 10:36, Sofia left the laundry room without the device.

At 10:39, she crossed the kitchen passage toward the rear entrance.

At 10:40, the official system went dark.

Daniel's mirror kept recording.

A black sedan pulled into the rear service drive at 10:42.

Dominic appeared on camera near the gate.

His old watch caught the light.

Vincent looked at him.

Dominic nodded grimly.

"That is me."

At 10:44, Sofia reached the gate.

She and Dominic argued.

There was no audio.

At 10:48, Dominic stepped away and made a phone call.

At 10:52, another vehicle arrived.

Charles's dark Mercedes.

Nobody spoke.

The attorney watched the screen without expression.

At 10:54, Charles got out.

He approached Sofia.

She backed away from him.

Dominic moved between them.

Then something unexpected happened.

A third person emerged from the passenger side of Charles's car.

A woman.

She wore a long pale coat and a scarf covering most of her face.

Isabella gripped the edge of the table.

"Who is that?"

The woman walked toward Sofia.

Sofia froze.

Even without sound, her shock was obvious.

She said something.

The woman removed the scarf.

Grace gasped.

Vincent moved so close to the laptop that his shadow covered half the screen.

The woman was not Isabella.

But she was wearing Sofia's silver pendant.

The same two leaves.

The same blue stone.

Vincent turned toward Isabella.

"You said Charles gave you that necklace eighteen months ago."

"He did."

"Then who was wearing it three years ago?"

Isabella stared at the frozen face on the screen.

Her lips parted.

"I know her."

Charles closed his eyes.

Vincent heard it.

"Who is she?"

Isabella did not look at him.

She looked at the woman standing beside Sofia in the recovered footage.

"Her name is Celeste Romano."

Vincent went still.

Isabella's next words changed the shape of the entire mystery.

"She was my older sister."

Isabella moved closer to the paused image, but she did not touch the laptop.

"Enlarge her face."

Marco did.

The grainy image sharpened enough to show Celeste's narrow jaw, dark eyes, and a faint scar near her left eyebrow.

Isabella sat down as if her knees had stopped working.

"That scar came from a bicycle accident when she was twelve."

Grace studied the image.

"Had Celeste ever been at this estate before that night?"

Isabella shook her head.

"Not that I knew of."

Vincent looked at Charles.

"Did you know Celeste Romano before Sofia vanished?"

Charles folded his hands.

"I knew her name."

"That is not what I asked."

"Then ask through counsel."

Vincent gave a cold smile.

"You are running out of rooms to hide behind."

Charles said nothing.

Isabella kept staring at her sister.

"Celeste changed after our parents died."

Vincent looked at her.

"Changed how?"

"She stopped talking about work."

"She started traveling without telling me where."

"She sent money when I did not ask for it, then disappeared for months."

Grace asked, "What kind of work did she do before that?"

"Nursing administration."

Marco's head turned.

"Medical administration?"

Isabella nodded.

"Mostly private clinics."

Vincent looked toward the recovered footage again.

A woman with medical experience had arrived with a medical transport team and helped remove Sofia under a psychiatric order.

The coincidence was gone.

"Did she know Bellamy?" Vincent asked.

Isabella hesitated.

"I saw his name in her address book once."

Charles looked at her.

It was the first direct reaction he had shown.

Isabella saw it.

"You do know her."

Charles's expression reset.

"My firm represented many healthcare providers."

"Celeste was not a provider."

"She worked for them."

"Where?"

Charles remained silent.

Isabella turned to Vincent.

"He told me after Celeste died that he had only met her once."

Vincent's jaw tightened.

"Another carefully sized lie."

Marco resumed the footage for several seconds.

The medical team led Sofia toward the van.

Sofia twisted around once and looked directly toward the mansion.

Her mouth moved.

Grace leaned closer.

"Can you read her lips?"

Vincent watched the silent image.

Sofia appeared to say two words.

Not leaving.

Vincent looked away.

For three years, the official story had begun with the claim that Sofia chose to leave.

The last thing she seemed to have said before the van door closed was the exact opposite.

Emily's small voice came from beside Grace.

"She wanted to come back inside."

Vincent looked at her.

"Yes."

Emily frowned at the adults.

"Then why did everybody say she left?"

Nobody answered.

Children had an irritating talent for reducing sophisticated deception to the simple question it was designed to avoid.

Grace squeezed Emily's shoulder.

"Because enough people repeated the same lie."

Emily looked at Charles.

"That does not make it true."

Charles met her eyes for less than a second, then looked away.

Vincent saw that too.

The recovered footage continued until 11:21 p.m.

After the van left, Dominic remained by the gate for seven minutes.

Charles spoke to him.

Dominic paced.

Then Charles handed him another paper.

Dominic signed it on the hood of the Mercedes.

Vincent froze the frame.

"What is that document?"

Dominic stared at the screen.

"I do not remember."

Vincent looked at him.

"Try harder."

Dominic rubbed his forehead.

"A witness acknowledgment, I think."

"For the medical transfer?"

"Yes."

Marco enlarged the frame.

The page title was unreadable, but a code appeared in the upper corner.

NP-17.

Grace whispered, "North Program Seventeen."

Vincent turned toward Charles.

The attorney's calm expression had become too deliberate.

That was the moment Vincent stopped wondering whether Sofia's recording might have misunderstood anything.

Someone had planned her removal down to forms, codes, vehicles, camera gaps, and witnesses.

And the planning had begun before the night she vanished.
