Chapter 15 - THE ARCHIVE UNDER THE ORCHARD

Saint Michael's Chapel sat on a wooded hill twelve miles south of the Moretti estate.

Vincent's grandfather had paid for its restoration in the 1960s.

The family had held weddings there, funerals there, and one baptism Vincent barely remembered.

It was exactly the kind of place Charles would choose because every road into it could be watched.

Marco studied the map.

"Three entrances."

"Two public, one maintenance."

"Dense woods on the north side."

"Bell tower gives visibility over the parking lot."

Vincent looked at the time.

6:02 a.m.

Noon was six hours away.

Grace stood near Dominic's ambulance while a paramedic argued that he needed imaging for possible broken ribs.

Dominic refused transport.

"Tape me up."

The paramedic looked at him as if considering whether professional ethics allowed slapping a patient.

Vincent stepped closer.

"Go to the hospital."

Dominic looked at him.

"You need me."

"That does not mean I trust you."

"It means you need me."

Vincent hated that he was right.

"You get examined here."

"You do not leave Marco's sight."

Dominic nodded.

Grace looked uphill toward the orchard foundation.

"We still have not checked the archive."

Dominic immediately said, "Do not."

Grace ignored him.

"Charles wants the schedule and Amendment Seven."

"He may also believe the archive has something he needs."

Marco considered it.

"We can inspect the entrance without opening the custody lock."

Dominic shook his head.

"You do not understand Anthony's systems."

Vincent looked at him.

"And you do?"

"I spent ten years being trained to."

The admission hung in the cold morning air.

Vincent's face hardened.

"There is another part of your life you forgot to mention."

Dominic gave a tired smile.

"We are going to need a longer day."

They climbed the orchard hill with state investigators and Marco's technical team.

The burned hunting cabin foundation looked exactly as Vincent remembered.

Four low stone walls formed a rectangle around weeds and collapsed timber.

At the center sat an old circular cistern sealed with an iron plate.

Dominic pointed to a small brass slot beside the hinge.

"That is not the main lock."

Marco crouched.

"What is it?"

"Audit trigger."

"Meaning?"

"Anything inserted there wakes the recording system."

Vincent looked around.

"After thirty years?"

Dominic nodded toward a modern cable disappearing beneath the stones.

"Somebody maintained it."

Marco followed the cable to a buried utility box.

Inside were new batteries, a cellular modem, and a small camera aimed at the cistern.

Vincent stared at it.

"Charles has been watching this entrance."

Dominic shook his head.

"Maybe."

"Or somebody else?"

"Anthony never trusted one custodian."

Grace crouched near the ruined wall.

Something pale had caught her eye beneath a broken brick.

She pulled on a corner of plastic.

A small transparent bag came free.

Inside was a lipstick tube.

Vincent recognized the shade.

Dark berry.

Sofia had worn it whenever she wanted to irritate his mother, who considered the color too dramatic.

Grace opened the bag.

A strip of paper had been rolled inside the empty tube.

Vincent's hands shook when he unrolled it.

The handwriting was Sofia's.

BELLAMY THINKS THE ARCHIVE IS BELOW.

HE IS WRONG.

Dominic stared.

"What?"

Vincent read the next line.

THE CISTERN IS ONLY THE DOOR.

Grace looked around the ruined foundation.

"Door to what?"

The final line answered.

FOLLOW THE WATER THAT DOES NOT FLOW.

Marco scanned the foundation.

An old stone drainage channel ran from the cistern toward the edge of the hill.

It should have descended toward the river.

Instead, it stopped at a solid retaining wall thirty feet away.

Dominic limped closer.

"That wall was not there when I was a kid."

Vincent looked at him.

"You sure?"

"We used to throw apples down this channel."

"They rolled into the lower field."

Marco tapped the stone.

The center sounded hollow.

A technician used a fiber camera through a crack.

Behind the wall was a narrow tunnel.

No electronic lock.

No custody sensor.

Only a manual steel door farther inside.

Vincent looked at Dominic.

"My father expected someone to be clever enough not to use the obvious entrance."

Dominic gave a grim smile.

"He expected Sofia."

They removed three stones and entered one at a time.

The tunnel smelled dry despite being built beneath a drainage channel.

Thirty feet in, Marco found the steel door.

It had no keyhole.

Only a mechanical combination dial.

Dominic stared at it.

"I know the code."

Vincent looked at him.

"Of course you do."

"Anthony made me memorize it when I was sixteen."

"Did he tell you what it opened?"

"He said one day it would tell me whether I was a Moretti or a child."

Grace frowned.

"That sounds healthy."

Dominic almost laughed.

He turned the dial.

17.

10.

40.

Vincent noticed.

"Ten forty."

"Sofia's disappearance time."

Dominic stopped.

"No."

He looked sick.

"This code is older than her disappearance."

Vincent stared at the dial.

"Then someone chose ten forty because of the code."

Grace felt cold.

Sofia had supposedly left at exactly the time built into Anthony's archive combination.

Her disappearance had been staged as a signature.

Dominic finished the combination.

The door unlocked.

No alarm sounded.

Inside was a room twenty feet square lined with metal cabinets.

A long desk stood in the center.

Old cassette tapes occupied one wall.

Hard drives occupied another.

Boxes were labeled with names Vincent recognized from politics, labor, business, law enforcement, and his own extended family.

Grace stared.

"How many lives did your father collect?"

Vincent's face hardened.

"Too many."

Marco raised a hand.

"Nobody touches anything."

State investigators began photographing the room.

Dominic stood at the threshold.

He looked less triumphant than haunted.

"This was supposed to be mine."

Vincent turned toward him.

"Do you still want it?"

Dominic looked at the cabinets.

"I spent half my life wanting what I thought you took from me."

He swallowed.

"Now I know it was a room full of other people's worst days."

Grace moved along the labels without touching them.

One box stopped her.

CARTER, DANIEL.

She froze.

Vincent saw it.

"Grace."

She pointed.

Her hand shook.

The investigators opened the box under camera.

Inside were photographs of Daniel.

Daniel driving Emily to preschool.

Daniel buying groceries.

Daniel repairing the greenhouse.

Daniel meeting with Sofia in a diner parking lot.

Grace's face went white.

There was also a typed risk assessment.

SUBJECT HAS ACCESSED RESTRICTED ESTATE SECURITY RECORDS.

SUBJECT HAS DISCUSSED LEGACY RESERVE WITH S. MORETTI.

RECOMMENDATION: TERMINATE ACCESS AND CREATE PERMANENT DISINCENTIVE.

Grace stopped breathing.

Vincent read the author line.

C. BELLAMY.

A handwritten response appeared beneath it.

APPROVED.

The initials were A.M.

Anthony Moretti.

Grace gripped the edge of the desk.

"Your father ordered it."

Vincent stared at the paper.

Anthony had been dead when Daniel died.

Marco noticed the same problem.

"This approval predates the accident by almost two years."

Dominic understood.

"Standing protocol."

Grace looked at him.

"What?"

"Anthony approved a future response if Daniel crossed a threshold."

Vincent's face twisted with disgust.

"And Charles decided when the threshold was crossed."

Grace's eyes filled.

"So a dead man killed my husband through instructions he left behind."

No one tried to soften it.

The investigators sealed the box.

Marco found another file.

MORETTI, VINCENT - CONTINGENCY.

Vincent stared at his own name.

The file contained years of surveillance notes written by Charles for Anthony.

Vincent's arguments with his father.

His efforts to shut down old operations.

His meetings with federal compliance lawyers.

His plan to dissolve several shell entities.

At the end was a memo from Anthony.

IF VINCENT ATTEMPTS TO DISMANTLE THE RESERVE, ACTIVATE DOMINIC.

Vincent looked at his cousin.

Dominic looked horrified.

"I never saw that."

Vincent believed him this time.

The next line was worse.

IF DOMINIC FAILS, USE SPOUSAL LEVERAGE.

Grace whispered, "Sofia."

Vincent read the date.

The memo had been written six years before Sofia disappeared.

Anthony had planned for her as leverage while eating Sunday dinners at her table.

Vincent closed the file.

"Seal this entire room."

One investigator nodded.

"It becomes evidence now."

"Good."

Marco's technician approached the central desk.

A modern monitor sat among the old equipment.

"This is active."

Vincent looked at it.

The screen showed four camera feeds.

Three were dark.

The fourth showed a small room.

A chair.

A table.

White roses in a glass vase.

And Sofia.

Vincent stepped so close to the monitor that Marco had to pull him back.

Sofia sat with her wrists free but a locked door behind her.

A clock on the wall read 6:31 a.m.

Live.

Grace whispered, "Where is that?"

Marco studied the image.

No windows.

Concrete walls.

A brass wall sconce shaped like a cross.

Dominic stared.

"Saint Michael's crypt."

Vincent looked at him.

"The chapel?"

"There are rooms beneath it."

"Family storage, old vestment rooms, a wine cellar from before the church renovation."

Grace looked at the white roses.

"Charles put her at the meeting place."

Marco shook his head.

"Or he wants us to believe he did."

The live feed suddenly changed.

Sofia looked directly into the camera.

She lifted one hand.

Then she pointed deliberately at the vase of white roses.

She shook her head.

Once.

Twice.

Then she mouthed four words.

May you like

Emily would have recognized them immediately.

White roses hate winter.
