Chapter 11 - THE SECOND VOICE

The estate was lit like a fortress when Vincent returned.

Security vehicles lined the drive.

Every gate was closed.

Floodlights washed the stone walls in hard white light.

Grace was out of the SUV before it fully stopped.

Marco's deputy met her at the front steps.

"Emily is in central security."

Grace did not slow down.

She found her daughter wrapped in a blanket in a swivel chair, eating crackers while six monitors showed different parts of the estate.

Emily jumped up.

Grace held her so tightly that the child complained.

"Mom, ribs."

Grace laughed and loosened her arms.

"Sorry."

"Did you find Sofia?"

"Not yet."

Emily looked disappointed but not surprised.

"Did you find Dad's stuff?"

Grace nodded.

"A lot of it."

Emily studied her mother's face.

"Was he brave?"

Grace swallowed.

"Yes."

"Were you?"

The question landed more gently and more painfully than an accusation.

Grace crouched.

"I am trying to be now."

Emily accepted that answer.

Vincent entered the room.

He looked at Emily first.

"You all right?"

"I told them the chair was my idea."

"I heard."

"It was a very heavy chair."

"I am sure it was."

A faint smile passed across his face.

Then he looked at Isabella.

She sat at the far end of the security room under guard.

The ivory engagement dress was wrinkled now.

She had removed her earrings.

Without the pendant, the hollow at her throat looked strangely bare.

"I sent you the letters," she said.

"I read them."

"Then you know Celeste was trying to tell me something."

"I know she was trying not to say it directly."

Isabella nodded.

"She was afraid her mail was being read."

"It probably was."

Marco entered carrying the cracked blue phone in an evidence sleeve.

Emily immediately looked at it.

"Did you fix it?"

"Better."

Marco held up a small encrypted drive.

"We cloned the entire storage."

Vincent's attention snapped to him.

"Anything besides the voicemail?"

"A lot."

Grace stared.

"How much?"

"Nine audio files."

Vincent's face went still.

"Nine?"

"The phone interface only showed the newest unheard file."

"The others were stored in a hidden folder."

Emily frowned.

"Phones can have secret folders?"

Marco looked at Grace.

Grace said, "That is not the lesson we are taking from tonight."

Marco almost smiled.

Vincent held out his hand.

"Play them."

Marco shook his head.

"Not here."

He looked at Emily.

Vincent understood.

"Grace, stay with her."

Grace stood.

"No."

Vincent frowned.

"Sofia put the phone in my hands."

"Technically, she put it in mine."

"And Daniel died trying to protect what was on it."

Grace looked at Emily.

"Marco's deputy can stay with her."

Emily raised both hands.

"I vote yes."

Grace gave her a look.

"You do not vote."

"That seems unfair."

"Life is full of disappointment."

Emily sighed with theatrical suffering.

Vincent turned to Isabella.

"You come too."

She looked surprised.

"You trust me now?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because Celeste may be on those recordings."

They moved to the secure conference room beneath the library.

Dominic and Charles were still missing.

No vehicle cameras had captured their departure.

The utility SUV Dominic stole had been found abandoned six miles away.

There was no sign of either man.

Marco connected the cloned phone drive to an offline computer.

Nine files appeared.

The first was dated three years and two days before Sofia vanished.

Vincent leaned forward.

"Start there."

Static filled the room.

Then Sofia spoke.

"Test one."

Her voice sounded annoyed rather than frightened.

"Daniel says this thing is old enough to survive a nuclear war, which probably means it will die before dinner."

Grace smiled despite herself.

That was Sofia.

The next file was a conversation between Sofia and Daniel in the greenhouse.

Daniel described missing camera segments.

Sofia described trust payments she could not explain.

Neither knew they were dealing with medical confinement yet.

The third file was different.

A second woman's voice appeared.

Isabella leaned toward the speaker.

"Celeste."

Vincent looked at her.

"Certain?"

"Absolutely."

On the recording, Celeste sounded breathless.

"You cannot keep looking into Harbor Light."

Sofia answered, "Then tell me why."

"Because Bellamy does not own it."

Everyone in the conference room went still.

Sofia asked, "Who does?"

Celeste did not answer immediately.

"Some companies do not belong to the name on the paper."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only one I can give you."

Sofia's voice sharpened.

"Then why meet me?"

"Because I saw the transfer order."

"What transfer order?"

"Yours."

A chair scraped in the old recording.

Sofia whispered, "Mine?"

Celeste continued.

"They are preparing to classify you as a family security risk."

"Who is they?"

"Bellamy and someone you trust."

Vincent looked toward the empty seat where Dominic might have sat.

The recording ended.

Marco opened the fourth file.

This one was recorded in a car.

Rain hammered a roof.

Sofia spoke rapidly.

"I found the document Vincent signed."

Daniel asked, "Did Bellamy forge anything?"

"No."

"You sure?"

"The signature is real."

"Then Mr. Moretti signed a commitment order against you?"

"Not knowingly."

Sofia sounded angry now.

"The signature page belongs to a security delegation packet."

Vincent closed his eyes.

He knew exactly which packet she meant.

Sofia continued.

"Clause Twelve lets Bellamy approve temporary protective confinement for any immediate family member if two physicians certify a security-related mental crisis."

Grace looked at Vincent.

"You signed that?"

"I signed the packet."

"Did you read Clause Twelve?"

Vincent did not answer.

The recording answered for him.

Daniel said, "Would Vincent have read it?"

Sofia gave a bitter laugh.

"He signs Bellamy's emergency packets with one eye on his phone and the other on the door."

Vincent looked down.

Grace said nothing.

Sofia's voice softened.

"That is not an excuse."

"But it is not the same as wanting this."

The file ended.

The fifth recording began with Sofia crying.

Vincent's head lifted.

Grace had never heard Sofia cry like that.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just the sound of someone trying to keep fear from becoming noise.

"Daniel, he knows."

"Who?"

"Dominic."

Vincent's hands tightened.

Sofia continued.

"I confronted him about Harbor Light."

"What did he say?"

"He told me to stop before I destroyed Vincent."

"Destroyed him how?"

"He said the money trail goes through companies Vincent inherited from his father."

Daniel asked, "Does that make Vincent responsible?"

"No."

"Then what does Dominic mean?"

Sofia's breathing shook.

"I think he means the theft is hiding something older."

The recording ended there.

The sixth file contained only thirty seconds.

A man's voice spoke.

Grace did not recognize it.

Vincent did.

He stood so fast that the chair behind him rolled into the wall.

"Play that again."

Marco replayed it.

The voice was weak, older, and unmistakable.

"If Sofia finds the old trust schedule, get her away from Vincent before she tells him."

A second voice answered.

Charles.

"And if she refuses?"

The first man replied.

"Then use the medical clause."

Vincent stared at the speaker.

Isabella whispered, "Who is that?"

Vincent's face had gone colorless.

"My father."

Grace looked at him in shock.

Anthony Moretti had been dead for five years.

The recording had been made only days before Sofia disappeared.

Vincent shook his head.

"That is impossible."

Marco checked the metadata.

"The file date may be wrong."

Vincent leaned toward the computer.

"My father died two years before this phone existed."

Isabella whispered, "Then somebody copied an older recording onto it."

Vincent stared at the waveform on screen.

The mystery had just reached backward into a grave he thought had been closed.

The seventh recording began with Daniel's voice.

"Sofia, if Anthony Moretti started this, Bellamy may only be maintaining it."

Sofia answered quietly.

"Then I need to know what 'this' is."

"And Dominic?"

A pause.

"Dominic knows enough to be afraid."

"Of Bellamy?"

Another pause.

"No."

Sofia's next words were almost a whisper.

"Of Vincent learning what his father left him."

Marco did not play the next file immediately.

He looked at Vincent first.

"There is metadata attached to the old recording of your father."

Vincent's face tightened.

"What kind?"

"A transfer date."

"The audio was copied onto Sofia's phone from another device two weeks before she disappeared."

Grace leaned forward.

"Who copied it?"

"The phone does not tell us."

Isabella studied the waveform.

"Celeste might have."

Vincent looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because she was moving between clinics and legal offices."

"If Bellamy kept old recordings, she may have had access."

Grace asked, "Would Celeste know Anthony's voice?"

"Maybe not."

Vincent looked at Sofia's hidden files on the screen.

"But Sofia would."

The implication settled over the table.

Someone had deliberately given Sofia proof that Anthony created the original system.

That person might have been trying to help her.

Or trying to frighten her into silence.

Marco opened the file properties.

A short label had been added when the audio was transferred.

A.M. - INSURANCE.

Vincent stared at the word.

"Insurance."

Grace frowned.

"Against what?"

Vincent thought of his father.

Anthony trusted nobody completely.

Not partners.

Not lawyers.

Not family.

If he recorded himself giving instructions, he might have done it to preserve proof of someone else's participation.

"Against Bellamy," Vincent said.

Marco nodded slowly.

"Your father may have recorded conversations so Charles could never claim he acted alone."

Isabella looked disgusted.

"Blackmail inside blackmail."

"That was Anthony's preferred architecture," Vincent said.

Grace looked at him.

"And you grew up thinking that was normal."

Vincent considered denying it.

Then he did something that would have been almost impossible for him the day before.

"Yes."

Grace nodded once.

The answer mattered because it was not defensive.

Marco searched the hidden phone folder for other metadata labels.

The recordings involving Celeste were marked C.R.

Daniel's files were marked D.C.

One file, however, carried no initials.

It carried a phrase.

IF HE CHOOSES BLOOD.

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"Play it."

The recording lasted only forty-one seconds.

Sofia's voice spoke first.

"If Vincent chooses blood over truth, I need a plan that does not depend on him."

Daniel answered.

"Do you think he will?"

A long pause followed.

"I do not know."

Vincent looked down.

Sofia continued from three years ago.

"He loves Dominic."

"He loved his father even when he hated what Anthony did."

"Families like this teach you that loyalty means closing your eyes at exactly the right moment."

Daniel asked, "And if he opens them?"

Sofia's answer came quietly.

"Then maybe we survive this together."

The file ended.

Vincent sat very still.

Grace looked at him but did not offer comfort.

He did not need comfort from that recording.

He needed the standard it had left behind.

Sofia had not trusted him blindly.

May you like

She had hoped he would choose correctly when the cost became real.

Three years later, that choice had finally arrived.
