Chapter 3 – The Family Meeting Nobody Controlled
Three days later, Emily's parents appeared at her front door.
Neither of them apologized.
Her father walked inside as though he still owned the house.
"You embarrassed your sister."
Emily calmly remained standing.
"No."
"I refused to finance her."
Her mother's eyes filled with frustration.
"You've changed."
Taylor quietly placed two printed folders onto the coffee table.
Inside were bank transfers.
Loan agreements.
Credit card statements.
Canceled checks.
Every dollar Emily had given her family during the last eleven years.
Total:
$487,360.18
Her father stared at the number.
Her mother whispered,
"That can't be right."
Emily slid one final page toward them.
A repayment agreement.
"If family matters so much..."
"You can begin paying me back."
Silence.
Then her father stood.
"You'd sue your own parents?"
Emily met his eyes without anger.
"No."
"I simply won't rescue you anymore."
Neither parent signed.
Neither offered repayment.
They left exactly as they had arrived—
May you like
expecting Emily to chase after them.
She didn't.
