Chapter 1 – The Police Never Needed to Arrive
The manager had barely reached for the restaurant phone when another voice interrupted.
"Wait."
Caleb stepped forward.
His face had lost every trace of celebration.
He looked at Madison—not as his fiancée, but as someone whose entire story had just unraveled.
"Is he telling the truth?"
Madison swallowed.
"It was just... temporary."
"You were going to pay me back."
Caleb stared.
"You used Emily's corporate card without asking?"
"I knew she wouldn't mind!"
"You always help us!"
The words echoed through the room.
Emily almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was the first honest thing Madison had said all evening.
Their mother rushed between them.
"Everyone is overreacting."
"It's family."
"No one was actually going to lose money."
The manager closed the folder.
"I'm sorry, ma'am."
"Using another person's payment information without authorization is fraud."
His calm professionalism somehow sounded harsher than shouting.
Caleb slowly removed the engagement ring from Madison's hand.
Gasps spread across the room.
"We're not discussing a wedding anymore," he said quietly.
"We're discussing whether I even know the woman I asked to marry me."
Madison burst into tears.
"Caleb... don't do this here."
He shook his head.
"You already did."
Without another word, Caleb handed the ring to the manager.
"Use this as collateral while my parents transfer the money."
Then he walked out alone.
