Chapter 2 – Every Debt Has a Record

Two days later, Emily arrived at work expecting another ordinary Monday.

Instead, Human Resources asked her to stop by.

Someone had attempted to access her corporate expense account three separate times over the previous six months.

Each request carried forged approval emails.

Each request had failed because the company's fraud detection system required biometric verification.

Emily recognized one destination immediately.

Madison's apartment complex.

Security logs showed the IP address.

She hadn't tried to steal one dinner.

She had been trying to use Emily's company account for months.

The company's legal department asked a simple question.

"Would you like us to pursue criminal charges?"

Emily sat silently for nearly a minute.

Taylor waited beside her.

Finally Emily answered.

"Not yet."

"But remove my parents as emergency contacts."

"And revoke every family member's authorization on every account I own."

That afternoon she changed every password.

Every banking credential.

Every insurance beneficiary.

Every document that still connected her finances to the people who had spent years calling her generous while treating her like an unlimited credit line.
