Chapter 18 - THE NIGHT ELENA DIED

Dante read the birth certificate three times without speaking.

Brielle watched the man who had built his entire identity around a family name discover that the name itself had been given to him.

Mara touched the edge of the red box.

"Daniel Vale."

Dante's voice was flat.

"Apparently."

Sofia stood beside Brielle, too young to understand the document and old enough to understand that it hurt her father.

She reached for his hand.

Dante looked down.

His face changed immediately.

He closed his fingers around hers.

"I'm okay."

Sofia frowned.

"You don't look okay."

Luca almost smiled.

"She gets that from Celeste."

Dante exhaled through his nose.

"Helpful."

Brielle lifted the photograph.

Elena stood beside Rosa.

"My mother knew."

Mara stared at it.

"She knew before we were born."

Dante looked toward the archive cabinets.

"Then Bellweather is older than Vittorio's version."

A speaker crackled overhead.

Vittorio's voice returned.

"Now you understand why names are paperwork."

Dante looked up.

"Show yourself."

"Soon."

"You wanted the archive open."

"You have it."

"Yes."

"Thank you."

The words chilled Brielle.

Luca ran toward the entrance.

The blue steel door slammed shut.

Locks engaged.

A second door closed behind the archive.

They were sealed inside.

Mara cursed.

Dante drew his gun and fired at the camera in the ceiling.

Sparks fell.

Vittorio's voice continued through another speaker.

"You always solved the immediate problem, Dante."

"Your father was the same."

"It's why both of you missed the structure."

Smoke began leaking through vents near the floor.

Brielle smelled gasoline.

"Fire."

Luca ran to the cabinets.

"He's going to burn the archive."

Mara grabbed Sofia.

"And us with it."

Dante looked at the red box.

"Take what matters."

Brielle stared at hundreds of cabinets.

"What matters?"

"Everything."

"We can't carry everything."

"Then find the master index."

Mara opened drawers.

Files spilled across the floor.

Luca searched the hard drives.

Brielle looked at the photograph wall.

Elena had hidden systems in ordinary patterns.

A music box.

A tapping code.

A photograph frame.

The archive itself might have a pattern.

She stepped back.

The photographs were not arranged alphabetically.

Not by date.

Not by age.

They formed blocks of three, seventeen, and nine.

"Mara."

Her sister looked up.

"The wall."

Mara saw it.

"Three, seventeen, nine."

They pulled the ninth photograph from the seventeenth row of the third section.

Behind it was a recessed compartment.

Inside sat one black hard drive and a VHS tape.

A label on the tape read ASHLAND - 10/14/16.

Brielle's hands went numb.

The night Elena died.

"That's the video Vincent mentioned."

Dante took the hard drive.

Luca grabbed the tape.

Smoke thickened near the floor.

Sofia coughed.

Dante looked at the walls.

"There must be another tunnel."

Mara shook her head.

"Vittorio used fire drills at the Rockford house."

"He always built a way out for himself."

Brielle remembered the old apartment fire escape.

Bootlegger tunnels often connected to coal chutes.

She searched the floor.

One row of tiles was newer.

"Here."

Luca kicked the edge.

A metal ring appeared beneath dust.

They pulled open a hatch.

Cold air rose from below.

"Sofia first."

Dante lowered his daughter to Mara.

Mara descended.

Luca followed with the evidence.

Brielle started down.

Dante stayed above.

"Come on."

He looked toward the cabinets.

"The people in those files."

"We have the master drive."

"What if it isn't enough?"

"Then dying beside the paper won't help them."

Dante looked at her.

Brielle reached up.

"You told me I'm not disposable evidence."

"Neither are you."

Something changed in his face.

He took her hand.

They descended as flames entered the archive.

The tunnel ended in the basement of a boarded laundromat two buildings away.

They climbed into darkness.

Luca found an old portable television in a storage room.

"You will not believe this."

He held up a VHS player beneath it.

Brielle stared.

"Of course there's one."

"The universe is becoming convenient."

"For once."

They connected the machine to a battery pack from Luca's equipment.

Dante hesitated before inserting the tape.

"You don't have to watch."

Brielle looked at the screen.

"I've watched that night every time I close my eyes."

"I'd rather see the version that actually happened."

Mara sat beside her.

Sofia curled against Dante beneath his coat.

Luca pressed play.

The image flickered.

A hidden camera angle showed the Dawson apartment kitchen.

Elena moved across the frame.

Sixteen-year-old Brielle appeared briefly carrying two soda bottles toward the bedroom.

Mara followed.

Brielle felt her sister take her hand in the present.

The front door opened.

Vincent Caruso entered.

Younger.

Dark hair.

Silver ring.

He carried the drink tray.

The sound was poor but audible.

"Enzo sent me."

Elena accepted the lie at first.

They spoke quietly.

Then Vincent asked for the ledger.

Elena denied having it.

Vincent's tone changed.

He moved toward the hall.

Elena blocked him.

"Leave my girls out of this."

Brielle's eyes filled.

Vincent raised both hands.

"I don't hurt children."

Mara whispered.

"Liar."

On the video, someone knocked.

Elena looked relieved.

She opened the door.

Vittorio entered.

Dante inhaled sharply.

Vittorio was younger too.

He kissed Elena on the cheek.

Mara looked away.

Their relationship was obvious before anyone said a word.

"You came."

Elena whispered.

"Of course."

Vittorio saw Vincent.

His face changed.

"What is he doing here?"

Vincent answered.

"Cleaning your mess."

The men argued.

Elena told them both the ledger was gone.

Vittorio demanded to know where Mara was.

"Sleeping."

"She's my daughter."

Brielle turned toward Mara.

Mara cried silently.

Onscreen, Vittorio lowered his voice.

"Then let me take her somewhere safe."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"Safe from who?"

"You?"

"Enzo?"

"The police you bought?"

Vittorio flinched.

"Elena."

"No."

"I trusted Bellweather."

"I put families into it."

"Now their addresses are being sold."

"Children are being traded between fake homes."

"And every one of you keeps telling me this is complicated."

Brielle felt her mother's anger through the damaged recording.

Then a fourth person entered.

Elias Vane.

He wore a police uniform.

Young enough to have black hair.

The same eyes.

Brielle stopped breathing.

Vane closed the door behind him.

"We have a problem."

Elena backed away.

"I called Internal Affairs."

Vane laughed.

"I know."

"They know your name."

"They know the name I gave them."

Vincent looked at Vittorio.

"You brought him?"

Vittorio shook his head.

"No."

That mattered.

Vane was not following Vittorio's order.

Vane was operating for himself or someone else.

Elena moved toward the hall.

Vane drew his gun.

Vittorio stepped between them.

"Put it down."

"She copied the master."

"She's the mother of my child."

"Then you should have controlled her."

Vittorio grabbed Vane's wrist.

They struggled.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the cabinet.

Elena ran toward the bedroom.

Vincent caught her arm.

She hit him with a lamp.

Vane recovered.

He raised the gun.

Brielle stopped breathing.

"No."

On the tape, Vane fired.

Elena fell.

Mara screamed from the hallway.

Brielle saw herself stagger from the bedroom.

Sixteen.

Drugged.

Confused.

She tried to reach her mother.

Vane turned the gun toward her.

Vittorio knocked his arm aside.

"Not the girls."

Vane shouted.

"They saw us."

Vittorio grabbed Mara.

"She's coming with me."

Elena, bleeding on the floor, reached toward him.

"No."

Vittorio looked down at her.

For one second, he looked destroyed.

Then he carried Mara toward the rear stairs.

Mara kicked and screamed.

Brielle tried to follow.

Her knees failed.

She fell in the hallway.

There was the frozen moment.

Except it was not what Brielle remembered.

She had moved.

She had reached for Mara.

The drug stopped her body.

Not cowardice.

Brielle covered her mouth.

Mara gripped her hand harder.

"Bri."

Brielle could not speak.

For eleven years she had sentenced herself for standing still.

The tape showed a girl fighting until chemistry won.

Vane stepped toward Brielle.

Vincent stopped him.

"Enough."

"She's a witness."

"She's a kid."

"You drugged her."

"To keep her asleep, not kill her."

Vincent pointed toward Elena.

"This is already out of control."

Vane looked at him with disgust.

"You don't have the stomach for scale."

Vincent's answer came quietly.

"Maybe that's why one of us still has a soul."

Vane laughed.

Sirens sounded outside.

Vincent fled through the rear.

Vane followed.

Vittorio was already gone with Mara.

The apartment remained still for nearly two minutes.

Then the door opened again.

Rosa entered with Enzo Moretti.

Dante leaned toward the screen.

His father looked frantic.

Rosa knelt beside Elena.

Elena was still alive.

Brielle gasped.

"Mom."

Onscreen, Rosa pressed cloth against the wound.

Elena whispered.

"Mara."

"Vittorio took her."

Enzo went pale.

"My brother?"

Elena nodded weakly.

"Brielle has the key."

"She doesn't know."

"Keep it that way."

Rosa squeezed her hand.

"Stay with me."

Elena looked toward unconscious Brielle in the hall.

"Tell her she moved."

Brielle broke.

A sound came out of her that she had not made at sixteen.

Mara wrapped both arms around her.

The tape continued.

Elena's breathing slowed.

"Tell her she tried."

Rosa cried.

"You tell her."

Elena smiled faintly.

"I don't think I get that part."

Then Elena died.

Brielle bowed her head against Mara's shoulder.

Dante looked away to give them privacy.

On the tape, Enzo stood.

His face became something terrible.

"Find Vittorio."

Rosa whispered.

"What about Brielle?"

"Protect her."

"If they think Mara died, they may stop watching."

Rosa stared at him.

"You're asking me to lie to a child."

"I'm asking you to keep one alive while I find the other."

The tape ended.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Brielle finally lifted her head.

"She told you."

Dante looked at her.

"What?"

"My mother told Rosa to tell me I moved."

"Rosa never did."

Mara's jaw tightened.

Brielle wiped her face.

"Eleven years."

"I hated myself for eleven years because the people protecting me decided the truth was dangerous."

Dante looked down.

"I'm sorry."

"You didn't make that choice."

"My family did."

"Then change what your family does next."

He met her eyes.

"I will."

Luca connected the black master drive to a clean laptop.

A password prompt appeared.

Three fields.

Brielle almost laughed.

"Of course."

Mara entered the melody sequence.

The drive opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Original identities.

Replacement identities.

Payments.

Judges.

Police.

Doctors.

Foster contractors.

Politicians.

Corporate officers.

And a folder marked ORCHARD - ACTIVE.

Dante opened it.

One document sat at the top.

FINAL TRANSFER SCHEDULE.

Tomorrow's date.

More than sixty children.

One central departure point.

A freight terminal on the Chicago River.

Mara looked at the address.

"Vittorio's terminal."

Dante's expression hardened.

"He's moving everyone before the ledger becomes public."

Sofia tugged Brielle's coat.

"The white-haired man said he was going to the river."

Everyone looked at her.

"What else did he say?"

Sofia thought carefully.

"He said Daddy would come because daddies always come when you take their little girls."

Dante knelt beside her.

"Anything else?"

She nodded.

"He told the other man to put Grandma in the red room."

Dante froze.

"Grandma?"

Brielle stared at him.

Rosa was supposed to be at the hospital.

Dante called immediately.

No answer.

Luca called the federal agent guarding Rosa.

His expression changed.

"She's gone."

"When?"

"Eight minutes ago."

Sofia whispered.

"The red room is at the river."

Brielle looked at the active transfer schedule.

Vittorio had never expected Ashland to be the final battlefield.

Ashland was only where he needed the master archive opened.

The real ending had already been prepared at the freight terminal.

May you like

And Rosa Moretti was waiting there.
