Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT THE ROOM STOPPED CLAPPING

Brielle had been afraid many times in her life.
Fear when she was sixteen had felt like paralysis.
Fear now felt like mathematics.
Distance to Vane's gun.
Distance to the curtain.
Distance to the nearest security camera.
Number of guests in the ballroom.
Number of seconds before Dante realized her microphone had gone dead.
Brielle counted all of it.
Then she smiled.
Vane's eyes narrowed.
"What's funny?"
"You."
"Careful."
"You built an entire system around making frightened people disappear."
"Now you're standing behind a curtain at a charity gala holding a waitress at gunpoint."
"It feels smaller than you probably imagined."
Vane pressed the pistol harder into her ribs.
"Call him."
He handed her the phone.
Brielle dialed Dante.
He answered before the first ring completed.
"Where are you?"
"Behind the east stage curtain."
Vane grabbed her wrist.
She continued quickly.
"Vane has Sofia and Rosa on video."
Silence.
Then Dante's voice changed.
"Are they alive?"
"Yes."
Vane leaned toward the phone.
"Leave the hotel, Dante."
"Come alone to Pier Fourteen at midnight."
"Bring both pieces of film."
Dante sounded calm.
"You know I don't have them."
"Then convince the Dawson girls to cooperate."
"And if I don't?"
Vane looked at Brielle.
"Your daughter learns what Ashland Avenue looked like."
Brielle felt rage cut through fear.
Dante did not respond immediately.
Then he said.
"Put Brielle on."
Vane held the phone closer.
"I'm here."
Dante's voice became quiet.
"Do you remember the diner on Halsted?"
Brielle frowned.
They had never discussed her diner in detail.
"Yes."
"The back freezer sticks."
Brielle understood.
A coded instruction.
Something that sticks.
Delay.
"It does."
"Make sure someone fixes it."
"I will."
Vane took the phone.
"Enough."
He ended the call.
Brielle looked at the phone screen just before it went dark.
A text notification flashed beneath the video connection.
NICO: SIGNAL TRACE COMPLETE.
Vane had not noticed.
Brielle had.
Rosa and Sofia's location was traced.
She needed to keep Vane busy.
"Why did you want me here?"
"What?"
"The woman at Orchard said you wanted me recognizable at the gala."
"Why?"
Vane looked toward the ballroom.
"Because there are people here who needed to see what happens when old evidence walks back into the room."
"You were going to kill me publicly."
"No."
"Public deaths create investigation."
"You were going to be arrested."
Brielle almost laughed.
"For what?"
"The murders at Bluebird."
"The Orchard kidnapping operation."
"A bomb threat against this hotel."
"Choose one."
"We prepared several."
Brielle stared at him.
"You were going to make me the criminal."
"A damaged waitress with a dead mother, a history in foster care, unstable housing, and recent contact with organized crime."
Vane shrugged.
"The narrative writes itself."
Brielle felt something old open inside her.
Every file written about her by people who never asked why she was angry.
Every landlord who saw a foster history and assumed trouble.
Every manager who counted poverty as evidence of unreliability.
Vane had built a weapon out of the same judgments.
"You picked the wrong damaged waitress."
Vane smiled.
"That's what your mother thought too."
Brielle moved before he saw it.
She threw the silver tray she had carried under the curtain.
It struck his gun hand.
The pistol fired into the ceiling.
The ballroom stopped clapping.
Brielle drove her elbow into Vane's throat.
He stumbled.
She grabbed the curtain and pulled with both hands.
The heavy fabric tore free from one hook and collapsed onto him.
Guests screamed.
Dante crossed the ballroom like a man who had been waiting for permission.
Vittorio moved too.
So did Vincent.
For one second, three enemies converged on the same curtain.
Brielle rolled out from beneath it.
Vane fired blindly.
A bullet struck the stage.
Dante tackled Brielle behind a table.
"Are you hit?"
"No."
"Sofia?"
"Nico traced them."
Dante's face changed.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Mara's voice came through Dante's earpiece.
"I do."
"Rosa and Sofia are at St. Agnes parking garage."
"Luca is two minutes away."
Dante closed his eyes for half a second.
Relief was not safe yet.
Vane emerged from the curtain.
Hotel security rushed toward him.
He raised his police badge.
"Chicago police."
"That woman attacked me."
Brielle stared at him.
It was exactly the narrative he had described.
Two uniformed officers entered the ballroom.
Vane pointed at Brielle.
"Arrest her."
Dante stood.
The officers hesitated when they recognized him.
Vane shouted.
"Now."
One officer reached for Brielle.
Vincent Caruso stepped between them.
Everyone stopped.
His bandaged hand was visible beneath his tuxedo sleeve.
"Before you arrest Miss Dawson, officer, you may want this."
He held up a flash drive.
Vane's face changed.
"Vincent."
"Hello, Elias."
"What are you doing?"
Vincent smiled.
"Retiring."
He handed the drive to a reporter standing near the stage.
Brielle recognized the woman from local television.
Vane lunged.
Dante blocked him.
The ballroom erupted again.
Vincent spoke loudly enough for nearby phones to record.
"That drive contains twelve years of payments from Bellweather shell companies to Deputy Superintendent Elias Vane."
Guests began filming.
Vane went pale.
"It also contains the original security footage from Ashland Avenue."
Brielle stopped breathing.
Vane stared at Vincent with murder in his eyes.
"You kept it."
"Insurance."
"You were there too."
"Yes."
"Then it destroys you."
Vincent looked at Brielle.
"Maybe some debts deserve payment."
Brielle did not know whether to hate him less or more.
The reporter clutched the drive.
Vane reached for his pistol.
Dante caught his wrist.
They slammed into the banquet table.
Glasses shattered.
Vittorio did not help either man.
He backed toward the service exit.
Mara appeared there.
She aimed at him.
"Going somewhere?"
Vittorio smiled at his daughter.
"Marie."
"Mara."
"Names are paperwork."
"Then yours will look fine on an indictment."
Vittorio's smile vanished.
He threw a glass at her face and ran.
Mara fired into the wall beside him.
Guests screamed and dropped beneath tables.
Brielle saw Vane twist away from Dante.
He reached inside his jacket.
Brielle grabbed the nearest chair.
Not a metal chair leg this time.
An entire expensive banquet chair.
She swung it into Vane's arm.
His gun flew across the floor.
Dante stared at her.
"You have a theme."
"Apparently."
Two federal agents entered from the north doors with Karen Holt behind them.
Nico had not only traced Sofia.
He had called the people they tested.
Vane looked around the ballroom.
Phones pointed at him from every direction.
His authority was collapsing in public.
That frightened him more than guns.
"This is a setup."
Karen Holt walked toward him.
"Then you'll enjoy explaining it on camera."
She showed a federal warrant.
Vane laughed wildly.
"You think this ends with me?"
Nobody answered.
"Bellweather was a door."
"Orchard is a city."
He looked directly at Brielle.
"Your mother found one ledger."
"She never found the master."
Brielle's stomach tightened.
"What master?"
Vane smiled.
"The one that says who the children became."
Agents cuffed him.
He continued smiling.
"You rescued seventeen today."
"How many do you think grew up and started working for us?"
Mara went pale.
Dante looked toward the reporter holding Vincent's drive.
Vincent had disappeared.
So had Vittorio.
Luca's voice came through the earpiece.
"Dante."
"I have Rosa."
Dante exhaled.
"And Sofia?"
Silence.
Dante's face changed.
"Luca."
"Rosa says Sofia was here thirty seconds ago."
"She's gone."
Brielle looked toward the ballroom doors.
A small yellow flower lay on the carpet beneath them.
This one was not crushed.
A white card was tied around its stem.
Brielle picked it up.
One sentence had been printed on the card.

BRING THE MASTER KEY TO ASHLAND AVENUE.
