Chapter 13 - ROSA'S SIGNATURE

Rain ran down Rosa Moretti's face like tears she had not earned the right to cry.
Mara stood in the alley with the microfilm clenched in one hand.
Brielle held the ledger pages against her chest.
Dante looked at his mother as if he had never seen her before.
"You signed it."
Rosa nodded.
"Yes."
"You signed away a nine-year-old child."
"I signed an emergency relocation order."
Mara laughed bitterly.
"That's a beautiful phrase for kidnapping."
Rosa took the blow.
"I believed I was moving you to a protected family in Wisconsin."
"Why?"
"Because the other order had already been written."
"What order?"
Rosa's voice shook.
"Termination."
Brielle stared at her.
The word was too clean.
"Say what it meant."
Rosa looked at her.
"They were going to kill Mara."
Mara stopped moving.
"Who was they?"
"I didn't know all of them then."
"Vittorio brought the papers to Enzo."
"He said Bellweather had been compromised and the child had seen a face she should not have seen."
"Enzo refused the termination order."
"He told me to sign a relocation override instead."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"And Father trusted Vittorio to carry it out."
Rosa closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"He handed Mara to the same man who wanted her controlled."
"We didn't know."
Mara stepped closer.
"You didn't check?"
Rosa's face crumpled.
"I checked the receiving file."
"It was perfect."
"A family in Green Bay."
"Two parents."
"No criminal records."
"A school enrollment waiting."
"Every page was forged."
Mara's voice sharpened.
"And when I never arrived?"
Rosa could not answer immediately.
"When I never showed up at that perfect school, what did you do?"
"I searched."
"How hard?"
"For years."
"Not hard enough."
Rosa nodded.
"No."
Mara looked almost disappointed that Rosa did not defend herself.
Anger needed resistance to stay simple.
Rosa refused to give it that simplicity.
"Why the ashes?"
Brielle asked.
Rosa turned toward her.
"Enzo believed whoever took Mara would keep watching you."
"He thought a public death would make them stop."
"So you made me mourn her."
"Yes."
"You watched me at the funeral."
"Yes."
"You watched me put flowers on an urn you knew wasn't hers."
Rosa covered her mouth.
"Yes."
Brielle's voice became cold.
"Then don't ask me to understand you tonight."
"I won't."
"Don't ask Mara to forgive you."
"I won't."
"And don't call what you did protection until the people you protected say it was."
Rosa lowered her head.
"I won't."
Dante looked away.
His family had spent generations confusing control with protection.
Brielle could see him recognizing the pattern in real time.
Luca interrupted from the mouth of the alley.
"We need to move before the men upstairs finish deciding Harold is stubborn."
A gunshot sounded inside the print shop.
Then another.
Dante looked toward the building.
"Harold."
Luca caught his arm.
"You go back and we lose everything he stayed behind to protect."
Dante's face tightened.
He hated the logic.
He obeyed it.
They entered Rosa's SUV.
The vehicle smelled like Sofia's strawberry hand lotion.
Brielle sat beside Mara in the rear seat.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Rosa drove because nobody trusted the driver she had arrived with.
Dante sat in front.
Luca followed in another car.
"Where is Sofia?"
Dante asked.
"Moved."
Rosa answered.
"Where?"
"Somewhere Vittorio doesn't know."
Dante turned toward her.
"I asked where."
"And for once, I am refusing to tell you because knowing makes you a target for extraction."
His expression darkened.
Rosa added quietly.
"You can be angry after you hug her."
Dante faced forward again.
Brielle almost admired Rosa's nerve.
Almost.
They drove to a modest brick house in Oak Park.
No gates.
No guards visible.
A bicycle lay in the yard.
An old man in flannel opened the door before they knocked.
"Rosa."
"Sam."
His eyes moved to the others.
"So this is the storm."
Rosa nodded.
"Can we use the basement?"
"You can use anything that doesn't catch fire."
Luca looked at Dante.
"That excludes most Moretti plans."
Dante ignored him.
The basement had shelves of canned tomatoes, a workbench, and a heavy wooden table.
They spread the printed ledger pages across it.
Brielle placed the microfilm beside them.
Mara stood over the map of forty-three Orchard sites.
"We can't raid all of these ourselves."
Dante nodded.
"We shouldn't raid any ourselves."
Brielle looked at him.
"That hasn't stopped you before."
"I'm trying a new experience called learning."
Luca leaned against the wall.
"Don't get attached."
Dante pointed at the sponsor code EV.
"Elias Vane controls enough Chicago police units to poison any local response."
Rosa looked at another code.
"There are judges here too."
"And state contractors."
Mara tapped the map.
"If we send this to the wrong agency, children get moved before anyone arrives."
Brielle studied the locations.
"Then don't send the whole map."
Everyone looked at her.
"Pick one house."
"Give one location to one agency."
"Give another location to somebody else."
"Watch which sites empty out."
Dante's eyes narrowed with interest.
"A leak test."
"Exactly."
Luca smiled.
"I like her."
Dante gave him a look.
"You keep saying that."
"Because she keeps solving things while we're threatening people."
Mara pointed at three sites.
"Rockford."
"Kenosha."
"Gary."
"I know all three were active at some point."
Dante took out a clean phone.
"I have a retired federal prosecutor in Milwaukee."
Rosa added.
"I know a child welfare investigator in Indiana who hates me enough to be trustworthy."
Brielle looked at her.
"That's an unusual qualification."
"People who like me have disappointed me more."
Mara chose Rockford.
"Give this one to nobody."
"Why?"
"I want to see it myself."
Brielle recognized the fear behind her voice.
"The house where you were kept?"
Mara nodded.
"If Orchard is using it again, I need to know."
Dante started to object.
Brielle raised a hand.
"She's going."
Mara looked at her.
"And I'm going with her."
Dante closed his eyes briefly.
"Of course you are."
"You can stay here."
"That was not agreement."
"It sounded supportive."
Luca laughed.
Dante pointed at him.
"You drive."
"I regret everything."
Before they left, Rosa received a call from the doctor guarding Sofia.
The child was safe.
Dante took the phone.
His entire voice changed when he heard his daughter.
"Hi, bug."
Brielle looked away because the tenderness felt private.
Mara did not.
She watched Dante carefully.
When the call ended, she spoke.
"Vittorio used to say you didn't care about anything except the organization."
Dante put the phone down.
"Vittorio taught many useful lies."
Mara nodded slowly.
"Apparently."
They prepared to leave for Rockford at dawn.
Then Luca's leak test produced its first result.
His phone buzzed.
He looked at the traffic cameras monitoring the Kenosha property.
Three vans had arrived less than twenty minutes after the Milwaukee prosecutor received the address.
People were being moved out.
Dante's face hardened.
"The prosecutor is compromised."
Luca checked Gary.
Nothing moved.
Rosa exhaled.
"My investigator may be clean."
Mara stared at the Rockford site.
No one had been told about it.
A black van rolled through its gate.
Brielle felt cold.
"Nobody got that address."
Dante looked around the basement.
Rosa.
Mara.
Brielle.
Luca.
Sam upstairs.
And Dante himself.
Luca's voice became quiet.
May you like
"Then the leak is in this room."
