Every financial server had been secured.
Every executive email account was frozen.
Auditors worked beside forensic accountants while attorneys prepared emergency filings.
Vanessa was escorted from the building carrying nothing except the designer handbag she had purchased with company funds.
No one said goodbye.
Adrian remained alone in the boardroom.

He looked exhausted.
"When did you stop believing in me?" he asked quietly.
Claire looked at the city skyline.
"The day you stopped believing you had to earn what you were given."
She placed one final document on the table.
Transfer records.
Her father's original investment.
Board resolutions.
Ownership agreements.
For twelve years, Adrian had introduced Bennett Meridian Group as the company he built.

"You could have taken everything from me years ago," Adrian whispered.
Claire nodded.
"But I wanted a husband."
"Not another employee."
He finally understood.
