Chapter 3 — The Boardroom Where Every Lie Died
Twenty minutes later, the largest conference room on the forty-second floor was completely full.
Board members.
Corporate attorneys.
Department heads.
Internal auditors.
Human Resources.
Even the company's outside legal counsel had joined through video conference.
Nobody smiled.
Claire sat quietly at the head of the table.
Not because she wanted power.
Because that chair belonged to the majority owner.
Adrian sat across from her.
Vanessa remained beside him, still believing loyalty would protect her.
Claire slid a folder across the polished table.
"Let's begin with expense reimbursements."
The CFO opened the file.
His face changed immediately.
Luxury vacations billed as client meetings.
Designer handbags classified as executive hospitality.
Private spa weekends listed as leadership retreats.
More than four million dollars had disappeared over three years.
Every approval carried Adrian's electronic signature.
Vanessa interrupted.
"Those were executive decisions."
Claire nodded.
"I know."
She pressed another button.
The conference room screen lit up.
Security footage.
Executive pantry.
8:57 a.m.
Everyone watched Vanessa slap Claire across the face.
No audio was necessary.
The room became painfully quiet.
Then another recording appeared.
Private parking garage.
Three weeks earlier.
Adrian placing a velvet jewelry box into Vanessa's hands.
The timestamp matched the day Claire reported her bracelet missing.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
"That's impossible."
Claire looked toward the Director of Security.
"Please explain."
"The footage was archived automatically."
"It cannot be altered."
The Chairman slowly removed his glasses.
He looked directly at Adrian.
"Is there anything you'd like to tell this board?"
Adrian lowered his head.
May you like
For the first time in twelve years...
He had no answer.
