Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Thought She Owned the Company
Adrian's voice echoed across the executive floor.
"Claire?"
Every employee looked back and forth between the CEO and the temporary records assistant standing with a bright red handprint across her cheek.
Vanessa frowned.
"You know her?"
Adrian recovered almost instantly. Years of board meetings had taught him how to hide panic behind polished confidence.
"She..." he began carefully, "works with one of our outside vendors."
It was a lie.
A smooth one.
Too smooth.
Claire watched him without blinking.
Not because the lie hurt.
Because it told her everything she needed to know.
He wasn't surprised to see her injured.
He wasn't asking who hit her.
He was protecting Vanessa before he even knew what had happened.
Vanessa relaxed immediately.
"I knew there had to be an explanation," she said, slipping naturally beside Adrian. "This temporary employee stole your water bottle, violated executive security, and started taking pictures."
She handed him the bottle.
The same bottle Claire had given him with a handwritten birthday card that read:
"No matter how busy life becomes, remember to take care of yourself."
Adrian accepted it without looking at Claire.
"I'll handle this," he said.
Claire finally spoke.
"Before you do... I'd like to know why my anniversary bracelet is on your secretary's wrist."
Silence.
Every conversation on the executive floor stopped.
Vanessa instinctively covered the bracelet with her opposite hand.
Adrian hesitated for half a second.
Then smiled.
"It looks similar."
Claire slowly unlocked her phone.
Another photograph appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
Pictures from their tenth anniversary.
The bracelet.
The hidden sapphire clasp.
The engraving inside.
Forever. A & C.
Claire held the phone toward the crowd.
"It doesn't look similar."
"It is mine."
Vanessa's face drained of color.
She looked at Adrian.
He said nothing.
For the first time since Claire had arrived, Vanessa looked uncertain.
Then Claire turned toward the security guards.
"I'd like Human Resources, Internal Audit, Corporate Legal, and the Chairman of the Board in the executive conference room."
One guard frowned.
"Ma'am... you don't have authority to—"
Claire reached into her canvas tote.
She removed a small black leather card holder.
Inside was a platinum identification card.
Claire Elizabeth Hail Bennett
Chairwoman — Hail Family Trust
Majority Shareholder — Bennett Meridian Group
The guard's eyes widened.
His posture straightened immediately.
"Yes, ma'am."
Vanessa laughed.
A nervous laugh.
"This is ridiculous."
"You expect everyone to believe that a billionaire walks around pretending to be temporary staff?"
Claire answered calmly.
"I didn't expect to have to prove it."
The guard spoke into his radio.
"Executive emergency protocol."
"Notify the board."
May you like
"Mrs. Bennett has arrived."
The office exploded into whispers.
