Chapter 4 - Seven Missing Minutes

Claire stared at Ryan's message until the letters seemed to blur together.
Nora took the phone from her hand without asking permission.
"Do not answer."
"He knows."
"Yes."
"How?"
Dean looked toward the flash drive on his workstation.
"If whoever prepared this drive embedded a tracking file, opening it could have sent a notification."
Claire turned on him.
"You said you were keeping it isolated."
"I am."
"Then how does Ryan know?"
Dean's face tightened.
"Which means the notification did not come from this office."
Nora handed the phone back to Claire.
"Someone expected you to find it."
Claire looked at Lily.
"And someone expected me to come here."
Nora nodded.
"Possibly."
The next message from Ryan contained only four words.
PLEASE LET ME EXPLAIN.
Claire almost laughed.
Four years of Ethan sleeping behind a steel door could not fit inside an explanation.
Four years of Lily asking why other fathers attended school events could not fit inside an explanation.
Four years of Claire selling her car, emptying savings accounts, and working weekends to fund appeals could not fit inside an explanation.
"I want him arrested."
Nora shook her head.
"We do not know what he did yet."
"He was in that alley."
"Being in an alley is not the same as committing the robbery."
"He knew about the video."
"That is more important."
Nora sat across from Claire.
"The question is whether Ryan helped frame Ethan, witnessed it, or has spent four years hiding because someone terrified him into silence."
Claire looked toward Lily again.
"I don't care why he was silent."
Nora's voice sharpened.
"You need to care if understanding why leads us to the people who can still hurt your husband."
That landed.
Claire forced herself to breathe more slowly.
"What about Locker 214?"
"I am filing an emergency preservation motion today."
"How fast can the court act?"
"If the judge believes there is a real risk evidence will disappear, hours."
Claire looked at Ryan's warning.
"And if the judge doesn't?"
"Then we go another way."
Nora began making calls.
Within forty minutes, she had reached the clerk assigned to Judge Amelia Hart, the judge who handled post-conviction matters for the county.
Within ninety minutes, a courier was carrying a sworn motion toward the courthouse.
Claire remained in the office with Lily while Dean copied every file from the flash drive onto encrypted storage.
At 1:18 P.M., Nora's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and wrote something on a legal pad.
"Thank you."
Claire stood as soon as the call ended.
"Well?"
"Judge Hart signed a temporary preservation order."
Claire released a breath.
"So nobody can touch the locker."
"That is what the order says."
"You don't sound relieved."
Nora looked at the clock.
"Because orders only work if they reach the right people before the wrong people do."
She grabbed her coat.
"I'm going to Archive B."
Claire picked up Lily's coat.
"We're coming."
"No."
"Nora."
"You received a threat this morning, and your daughter was used to carry concealed evidence into a prison."
Claire clenched her jaw.
"I am not sitting in a hotel while someone destroys the only proof Ethan has ever had."
Nora studied her for a moment.
"Then Lily stays with Dean and my assistant."
Claire almost refused.
Lily looked up.
"Mommy, are you going to help Daddy?"
Claire knelt beside her.
"Yes."
"Then go."
The simple certainty in Lily's voice broke something inside her.
Claire kissed her forehead and left with Nora.
Municipal Archive B was a windowless concrete building behind the old courthouse, surrounded by chain-link fencing and cameras that looked older than the cars in the parking lot.
A records supervisor named Dennis Moore met them at the front desk.
He read Judge Hart's order twice.
"Locker 214?"
"Yes."
Dennis looked uncomfortable.
"There is a problem."
Claire felt immediate dread.
"Of course there is."
Nora placed both hands on the counter.
"What problem?"
Dennis turned his monitor toward them.
"Locker 214 was accessed this morning."
Nora's face became still.
"By whom?"
"The log says Detective Paul Rourke."
Claire stared.
"He's retired."
"I know."
"Then why does he have access?"
Dennis swallowed.
"He shouldn't."
Nora's voice dropped.
"What time?"
"9:07 A.M."
Claire looked at the clock on the wall.
It was 2:41 P.M.
"Open the locker."
Dennis hesitated.
"I need authorization from my director."
Nora slid the court order closer.
"You have authorization from a judge."
Dennis picked up a radio.
Ten minutes later, the three of them walked through two secured doors and down a corridor lined with numbered steel lockers.
Locker 214 stood near the end.
Dennis inserted his key card.
The lock clicked.
He opened the door.
The shelf inside was empty.
Claire made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a gasp.
"No."
Nora immediately took out her phone and photographed the empty locker.
"Dennis, do not touch anything."
"I didn't."
"Preserve your access logs."
"I will."
"And every camera recording from this building since midnight."
Dennis's expression became worse.
"There is another problem."
Claire turned.
"Say it."
"The camera system went offline at 8:52 this morning."
Nora stared at him.
"And came back?"
"At 9:24."
Claire felt rage rising so fast she could barely speak.
"The exact time Rourke was here."
Dennis nodded miserably.
Nora called the court from the hallway and requested an immediate hearing on evidence spoliation.
Claire called Ryan.
Nora spun around.
"What are you doing?"
"Finding out what he knows."
Ryan answered on the first ring.
"Claire."
His voice sounded frightened.
"Where is the drive?"
There was a pause.
"You went to the locker."
"Where is the drive, Ryan?"
"You should not have gone there."
"It is empty."
Ryan exhaled sharply.
"Then Rourke got there first."
Claire's knees nearly buckled.
"How do you know Rourke was going?"
"Because he called me last night."
Nora stepped closer so she could hear.
"Why is a retired detective calling you?"
Ryan said nothing.
Claire's voice shook with fury.
"I saw you in the alley."
Silence.
"I watched the video."
Ryan whispered something Claire could not hear.
"Say it again."
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what?"
"For everything."
Claire's eyes filled with tears she refused to let fall.
"Did you frame your brother?"
"No."
"Did you help them use Ethan's truck?"
Ryan breathed unevenly.
"I didn't know what they were going to do."
"Who is they?"
"Claire, get Lily somewhere safe."
"Who is they?"
"Rourke and a man named Wade Mercer."
Nora wrote the name down immediately.
"Who is Wade Mercer?"
"The man in the hood."
Claire looked at Nora.
"Why did Ethan go to prison?"
Ryan began crying quietly.
"Because I was a coward."
Claire gripped the phone.
"Tell me what happened."
"Not on the phone."
"You have had four years."
"Meet me tonight."
"Where?"
"The old Riverfront bus depot at seven."
Nora shook her head fiercely.
Claire ignored her.
"If this is a trap, Ryan, I swear to you-"
"It isn't."
His voice broke.
"I have something Rourke does not know I kept."
Claire looked at the empty locker.
"What?"
Ryan lowered his voice.
"The original drive."
The call ended.
For several seconds, Claire and Nora simply stared at one another.
Then Dennis's radio crackled.
A security officer's voice came through in a burst of static.
"Dennis, you need to get up front."
Dennis lifted the radio.
"Why?"
The reply came immediately.
"Police are here."
Nora's eyes narrowed.
"For what?"
The radio crackled again.
May you like
"They say Claire Walker is under investigation for tampering with evidence."
