Chapter 3 - The Envelope In Lily'S Coat

Nora Feldman's office occupied the second floor of an old brick building between a tax preparer and a dentist, and it looked nothing like the polished law firms Claire had once imagined would save Ethan.
There was no marble lobby, no receptionist offering coffee in porcelain cups, and no wall of expensive abstract art.
There were towers of case files, two mismatched lamps, a humming copier, and photographs of six former clients who had walked out of prison after wrongful convictions.
Claire had studied those photographs every time she visited.
That morning, she could not stop imagining Ethan's face in the seventh frame.
Lily sat at a small table in the corner, drawing a unicorn with wings that were far too large for its body.
Nora stood beside a computer monitor while a digital forensics specialist named Dean Patel examined the flash drive without connecting it to any ordinary network.
"I am making a forensic image now."
Claire nodded even though she barely understood the process.
"Can you tell who put it in Lily's coat?"
Dean did not look away from the screen.
"Maybe who handled the files, not who handled the coat."
"What if this is a trap?"
"Then we treat it like one until it proves otherwise."
Nora crossed her arms.
"The bigger problem is chain of custody."
Claire looked at her.
"If it proves Ethan is innocent, why should that matter?"
"Because proof and admissible proof are not always the same thing."
Claire hated that sentence instantly.
"So someone can hand me the truth and the court can still refuse to look at it?"
"If we cannot establish authenticity, the state will call it fabricated."
"Ethan has already lost four years."
"I know."
"No, you know the number."
Claire pointed toward Lily.
"He missed her first word, her first day of preschool, her first loose tooth, and every birthday she can remember."
Nora's expression softened, but her voice remained measured.
"That is why I am not going to rush into court with something the prosecutor can destroy in ten minutes."
Dean lifted one hand.
"I have files."
The room went silent.
"How many?"
"Three video files, one audio file, and a text document."
Claire stood.
"Open them."
Dean glanced at Nora.
Nora nodded.
"Start with the text file."
Dean clicked once.
A plain document appeared on the screen.
There was no signature.
There were only four lines.
CAMERA FOUR RECORDED THE EAST SERVICE ALLEY.
11:42 P.M. TO 11:49 P.M. WAS REMOVED FROM DISCOVERY.
THE ORIGINAL COPY WAS KEPT OFF THE EVIDENCE SERVER.
ASK DETECTIVE ROURKE WHY.
Claire felt cold despite the overheated office.
"Rourke."
Nora nodded.
"The lead detective."
"The man who arrested Ethan in our kitchen."
"Yes."
Lily looked up from her drawing.
"Mommy?"
Claire turned immediately and forced a smile.
"I'm okay, sweetheart."
"You're making the scared face."
Claire walked over and kissed the top of her head.
"Grown-ups sometimes make scared faces when they are thinking hard."
"Daddy makes that face too."
Claire's throat tightened.
"Keep drawing for me."
She returned to the monitor.
Dean opened the first video file.
The footage showed a narrow alley behind the jewelry exchange on the night of the robbery.
The timestamp read 11:41:53 P.M.
Rain streaked the camera lens.
A delivery truck sat beside a dumpster.
Seven seconds later, a dark blue pickup entered the alley.
Claire grabbed the edge of the desk.
"That's Ethan's truck."
Nora leaned closer.
The pickup stopped beneath a security light.
The driver's door opened.
A man climbed out wearing a hooded jacket.
His face was turned away from the camera.
Claire stared at the way he moved.
"That is not Ethan."
Nora did not respond.
"Look at him."
"I am looking."
"Ethan had torn his ACL the year before the robbery."
The man in the video jogged toward the building without the slightest limp.
Nora's eyes sharpened.
"Was that in Ethan's medical record?"
"Yes."
"Was it raised at trial?"
"His lawyer mentioned it during closing, but there was no video."
The timestamp reached 11:42:11.
The footage froze.
Then it jumped to 11:49:03.
The pickup was gone.
Dean frowned.
"That is the missing segment."
"But the drive was supposed to contain it."
"Maybe one of the other files."
He opened the second video.
The angle was the same, but the file began at 11:42:08.
The hooded man was standing beside Ethan's pickup, speaking to someone out of frame.
A second person stepped into view.
Claire's breath stopped.
The second man wore a dark raincoat.
He was not masked.
His face was visible for less than two seconds before he turned away.
Nora froze the frame.
Claire stared.
"Do you know him?"
Claire's lips parted, but no sound came out.
Nora looked from the screen to Claire.
"Claire?"
"Yes."
Her knees weakened.
She sat down.
"That's Ryan."
Lily continued coloring in the corner, unaware that her uncle's face had just appeared on evidence hidden from her father's jury.
Dean zoomed in.
The image pixelated slightly, but the resemblance remained unmistakable.
Ryan Walker had the same narrow jaw as Ethan, the same dark hair, and the same habit of lifting one shoulder when he was tense.
Claire had watched him do it at every Christmas dinner for ten years.
"Are you certain?"
"I am certain."
Nora's voice became clinical.
"Do not call him."
Claire was already reaching for her phone.
"He let Ethan sit in prison."
Nora caught Claire's wrist.
"Do not call him."
"He sat beside me at the trial."
"Claire."
"He held Lily while I testified."
"And if he is involved, calling him tells him we have evidence."
Claire stared at the screen until anger burned through the shock.
"Open the rest."
Dean opened the third video.
The footage showed the same alley five minutes later.
Ryan was gone.
The hooded man emerged from the back door carrying a black bag.
He climbed into Ethan's truck.
Before he closed the door, the hood shifted enough to reveal part of his face.
It was not Ethan.
It was also not Ryan.
Nora leaned toward the monitor.
"Do you recognize him?"
Claire shook her head.
Dean opened the audio file.
Static filled the speakers.
Then two male voices became audible.
The first was distant and distorted.
The second voice was clear enough to make Claire's skin crawl.
"You said Walker would take the fall."
There was a pause.
Then another man answered.
"He will if everybody sticks to the story."
Claire covered her mouth.
She had heard the second voice many times in court.
She had heard it explaining evidence to jurors.
She had heard it outside the courtroom telling reporters that justice had been served.
Detective Paul Rourke.
Nora replayed the clip.
"He will if everybody sticks to the story."
Dean stopped the audio.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Finally, Claire whispered the question that terrified her most.
"Is this enough to get Ethan out?"
Nora looked at the screen.
"It is enough to start a war."
Claire did not care about war.
She cared about one locked door opening.
"Then start it."
Nora turned toward her.
"Not yet."
Claire stared at her in disbelief.
"Not yet?"
"We need the original source."
"You just watched it."
"I watched files on an anonymous drive secretly sewn into a child's coat."
Claire's eyes flashed.
"So what do we do?"
Nora pointed to the evidence log.
"We find the original storage drive that was never entered into evidence."
"Where?"
"According to the old property index, physical media from major cases was stored in the county evidence annex."
Dean shook his head.
"Not anymore."
Nora looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"The annex had a fire three years ago."
Claire felt the room tilt.
"A fire?"
"Most of the evidence from that period was destroyed."
Nora's expression hardened.
"Most?"
Dean pulled up a public inventory report.
"Some high-value and homicide evidence was moved before the fire."
Claire leaned closer.
"Where was Ethan's case?"
Dean typed the case number.
The screen loaded slowly.
Then one line appeared.
TRANSFERRED - MUNICIPAL ARCHIVE B, LOCKER 214.
Nora exhaled.
"There it is."
Claire's phone rang.
The screen displayed RYAN WALKER.
Nobody moved.
It rang again.
And again.
On the fourth ring, a text message appeared.
CLAIRE, I KNOW YOU SAW THE VIDEO.
Her blood ran cold.
A second message arrived immediately.
May you like
DO NOT GO TO LOCKER 214.
