Chapter 14 - THE MAN BESIDE ME

Marcus studied the security image until the color drained from his face.
"That's Hayes," he said.
I felt the familiar sensation of a room becoming smaller.
Daniel Hayes had been Vanguard's medic, a man who carried wounded strangers across a burning deck without being asked.
He had helped me move into my new house after Evelyn's death.
He had attended Chloe's birthdays and then vanished from our lives five years earlier.
Marcus tried to call him.
The number went straight to voicemail.
Leo traced the gray vehicle through public toll records supplied under warrant and found it entering a private medical facility two counties away.
Rebecca asked Rachel to handle the lead.
I asked Marcus why he had never mentioned Hayes was still working around classified projects.
"I didn't know," he said.
His answer was immediate, but his eyes shifted.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Marcus stared at the table.
"Rourke contacted me after Evelyn's funeral," he said.
"He said your family would be safer if I kept you away from certain records."
"And you listened?"
"For a while."
I stood so abruptly my chair struck the wall.
Marcus didn't move.
"I believed I was protecting Chloe," he said.
"You decided what my daughter was allowed to know."
"I was wrong."
Those three words were not enough, yet they were the first honest words I'd heard about the old mission.
I asked him to leave the room.
He obeyed.
At the hospital, Chloe saw my face and insisted I tell her what had happened.
I explained the betrayal in plain terms, refusing to hide behind secrecy the way everyone else had.
She listened and wrote: DID HE HURT ME?
"I don't know," I admitted.
She studied me for a long time.
Then she wrote FIND OUT BEFORE YOU HATE HIM.
My daughter had nearly died because powerful people considered her disposable, and she still understood fairness better than the adults surrounding her.
That evening, a recorded message arrived from Hayes.
"Alexander, if you're hearing this, Marcus has finally told you the truth."
His voice sounded battered.
"I helped move Evelyn after the crash.
I believed Rourke would release her once the threat passed."
The recording cut out, then resumed.
"I was wrong.
They kept her working.
She tried to leave when Chloe turned eighteen."
A noise sounded in the background.
Hayes lowered his voice.
"I can get Vale out, but Evelyn refuses to come until she finishes something."
The final words arrived under a burst of static.
"The person giving orders isn't Rourke anymore.
May you like
It's someone Chloe knows."
