Chapter 1: The Smile That Could Never Slip

The applause followed Isabella Vance wherever she walked.

At the center of the Vance Foundation's annual gala, photographers captured every polished smile, every graceful step, every perfect family portrait beneath the crystal chandeliers.

To the world, Isabella looked untouchable.

She wore a custom emerald gown.

Diamond earrings sparkled against her chestnut hair.

Her infant son, Oliver, rested peacefully in her arms beneath an ivory blanket embroidered with the Vance crest.

No one noticed that her fingers trembled.

Across the ballroom stood Adrian Vance.

He never smiled.

He simply watched.

That was always worse.

His silence carried consequences everyone inside the mansion understood.

One careless word.

One wrong expression.

One public embarrassment.

That was enough for someone to disappear from the family forever.

As Isabella greeted another group of donors, Evelyn Vance approached with flawless elegance.

"You've done well," Evelyn said softly while adjusting Oliver's blanket.

Then her pleasant smile never changed as she whispered,

"But remember... grandchildren can always be raised by another mother."

The words froze Isabella's blood.

Only years inside the Vance family taught someone how to threaten another person without changing their smile.

Later that evening Isabella excused herself to the nursery.

She locked the door behind her.

Only then did she allow herself one shaky breath.

She kissed Oliver's forehead.

"I won't let them take you."

Hidden beneath the rocking chair sat a small steel lockbox.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Private recordings.

Evidence she had secretly collected for almost four years.

She wasn't planning revenge.

She was preparing for survival.

Outside the nursery door...

Someone quietly stopped walking.
