CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH COMES OUT

That night, Ryan followed Emily to the hospital.

The doctor didn't soften the reality.

"The cancer is progressing faster than expected."

"We can still treat it, but we cannot wait much longer."

Ryan felt sick.

Then the doctor said something else.

"Emily has attended every appointment alone."

Ryan lowered his head.

Alone.

Every blood test.

Every scan.

Every terrifying conversation.

Alone.

Back at home, Sophie entered Emily's room.

For the first time in years, she looked ashamed.

"I thought you were being dramatic," she admitted quietly.

Emily didn't answer.

Sophie sat beside her.

Then something unexpected happened.

The older woman began to cry.

Real tears.

"I should have protected you."

For months she had judged Emily.

Now she realized she had been helping destroy the very person carrying her grandchild.

The next morning, Ryan ended all contact with the woman whose lipstick had stained his collar.

Then he made a promise.

"No more lies."

May you like

"No more excuses."

"I'm staying."
