CHAPTER 2 — THE DIAGNOSIS
Sophie stared at the medical report, unable to speak.
Her hands trembled.
The words on the page seemed impossible.
Aggressive Blood Cancer.
The diagnosis had been confirmed three weeks earlier.
A handwritten note from the doctor was attached.
"Immediate treatment is strongly recommended. Delay may put both mother and baby at risk."
The room fell silent.
Ryan finally stood up.
"What is it?" he asked.
Sophie slowly handed him the report.
The color drained from his face.
Emily closed her eyes.
She had wanted to tell him.
Many times.
But every time she tried, he was too busy.
Too distracted.
Or too interested in someone else.
"You knew?" Ryan whispered.
Emily nodded.
"I didn't want the baby to feel my fear."
For the first time, Ryan noticed how pale she looked.
How weak she had become.
And suddenly every excuse he had ignored came rushing back.
The missed meals.
The endless exhaustion.
The pain she tried so hard to hide.
