Chapter 5 - Bring the Boy

Claudia denied everything for exactly thirty-seven seconds.
Then Richard placed the passport on the table.
She stopped.
Mark stared at her as if he had never seen her before.
"You were leaving?"
Claudia looked at him.
"You don't get to ask me that."
"You were taking Noah?"
Her silence answered.
Mark crossed the room.
Richard's security chief blocked him before he reached her.
"Move."
Daniel did not.
Mark shouted.
"She was going to steal my son."
Richard's eyes hardened.
"Five minutes ago you told me he wasn't your son."
Mark turned.
The truth of his own words struck him.
Claudia laughed bitterly.
"There it is."
She looked at Richard.
"That's the part nobody wants to say out loud."
Richard sat opposite her.
"Say it."
Claudia looked toward Noah, who slept under medication in the next room.
"Samuel told me the trust was locked until Noah turned twenty-five unless his legal guardian approved certain distributions."
Richard frowned.
"That is not how Eleanor structured it."
"I know that now."
"When did Samuel contact you?"
"Two years ago."
Mark swore.
Claudia continued.
"He said Eleanor had left a private amendment."
"There is no amendment."
"He showed me one."
Richard leaned forward.
"What did it say?"
Claudia swallowed.
"That if Noah's biological father established paternity before Noah turned seven, the trust would move into a guardianship-controlled account."
Richard stared at her.
"And Noah turns seven in three weeks."
Claudia nodded.
The entire scheme began to take shape.
Samuel needed Noah's biological father.
Claudia knew who that man was.
Mark wanted access to the trust.
And Eleanor had discovered enough to hide the red box before she died.
Richard asked the question everyone had avoided.
"Who is Noah's father?"
Claudia's face closed.
"I won't tell you."
Mark lunged against Daniel's arm.
"Tell him."
Claudia glared at her husband.
"You knew there was a possibility from the beginning."
"Not who."
"Because you never wanted to know."
Mark stopped fighting.
Claudia looked at Richard.
"I made a mistake before Noah was born."
Richard waited.
"One night."
"With whom?"
"It doesn't matter."
Richard's voice sharpened.
"A man may be trying to use my grandson to seize seventy million dollars. It matters."
Claudia's hands began to shake.
"His name is Evan Mercer."
Daniel looked up.
Richard knew the name.
Evan Mercer had once been Mark's closest friend.
He had also been Hale Aerospace's chief financial officer.
Five years earlier, Evan had disappeared after being accused of stealing twelve million dollars from the company.
Richard himself had authorized the internal investigation.
The evidence had looked overwhelming.
Evan fled before charges were filed.
His car was later found abandoned near Lake Superior.
Most people assumed he had died.
Richard did not speak for several seconds.
"Evan Mercer is alive?"
Claudia nodded.
Mark looked sick.
"You slept with Evan?"
Claudia looked at him with contempt.
"You were sleeping with two women from your office while I was pregnant. Don't perform outrage now."
Mark's mouth opened.
Richard cut him off.
"Where is Evan?"
Claudia shook her head.
"I don't know."
Daniel placed the note beside the passport.
"Did Samuel want you to bring Noah to Evan?"
"He never said."
"Then why Mexico City?"
"He said someone would meet us."
Richard looked at her.
"And you agreed?"
Tears finally appeared in Claudia's eyes.
"I thought I could get Noah away from Mark."
Mark shouted.
"You put him in the snow."
Claudia spun toward him.
"You did."
"You broke his plane."
"Because he found the box you stole from your mother's study."
Richard's gaze snapped to Mark.
The accusation landed cleanly.
Mark went silent.
Richard stood.
"You stole it."
Mark looked away.
"I found it."
"In a locked study."
No answer.
Richard now understood why Noah had been punished.
He had seen the red box.
He had seen Samuel.
He had probably heard enough to threaten a plan that had been building for years.
Daniel's tablet chimed.
A bank alert from Hale Family Office had triggered after the trust's emergency lock was activated.
Someone had attempted a transfer less than ten minutes ago.
The amount was sixty-eight million dollars.
Richard stared at the screen.
The request used Samuel Pike's trustee credentials.
It also contained a digital signature attributed to Noah's legal guardian.
Claudia's signature.
She stared at it.
"I didn't sign that."
Richard believed her.
Because the document was timestamped while she had been sitting under guard in his library.
Daniel looked at Richard.
"Someone has her credentials."
Richard's eyes shifted to Mark.
Mark immediately shook his head.
"Not me."
The system displayed the destination account.
It was registered to a shell company in Delaware.
Daniel opened the corporate record.
The registered manager's name appeared on the screen.
Evan Mercer.
Richard felt the room tilt around a truth that made no sense.
A dead man had just tried to empty Noah's trust.
May you like
And somewhere beyond the locked gates, Samuel Pike had vanished with exactly what he needed to try again.
