Chapter 2 - Forty-Seven Missing Minutes

Richard ordered the guests into the library while Daniel sealed the security office.
No one protested.
The birthday celebration was over.
Music had stopped.
Candles still burned on the table, but now they looked less festive than accusatory.
Noah sat beside the fireplace with a mug of warm milk held between both hands.
Richard had asked the private nurse who traveled with him to examine the boy's feet.
The nurse found early frost injury, several healing bruises on one shin, and a thin mark around Noah's left wrist.
Richard saw that mark before she covered it again.
"What made that?"
Noah stared into the milk.
"I don't remember."
The answer sounded practiced.
Richard did not press him.
He had seen frightened adults lie with less discipline.
Children learned that kind of caution only when honesty had consequences.
Across the room, Mark paced.
"This is insane."
Claudia sat rigidly in a chair, staring at her phone even though Daniel had disabled the lodge network.
"You are holding us here because a camera glitched."
Daniel looked up from the tablet.
"It did not glitch."
Mark turned.
Daniel continued.
"The files were manually removed from the local recorder."
Richard asked the question calmly.
"Who has access?"
"You, me, the lodge manager, and the temporary administrator code issued this afternoon."
Richard's gaze shifted to Mark.
Mark stopped pacing.
"I asked for access because the party planner needed to test the lighting system."
Daniel shook his head.
"Camera deletion is not part of the lighting system."
Claudia jumped in.
"Then the planner did it."
Daniel looked at her.
"The temporary code was used from the tablet registered to Mr. Mark Hale."
No one moved.
Richard felt Noah's hand tighten around his sleeve.
Mark laughed once.
It was too quick and too loud.
"Fine. I deleted it."
Claudia stared at him.
Mark continued before anyone could speak.
"There was embarrassing footage from earlier. I had too much to drink. I didn't want Dad seeing me argue with Claudia."
Richard studied him.
"Forty-seven minutes of an argument?"
"It got ugly."
"Where was Noah?"
Mark looked toward the sofa.
Noah lowered his eyes.
"In his room."
The boy whispered.
"No."
Mark's face tightened.
Richard turned to Noah.
"You can tell me."
Noah's lips trembled.
"I was in the hallway."
Claudia stood.
"He keeps changing his story."
Richard raised one hand.
Claudia stopped speaking.
Noah stared at the floor.
"Mom was mad because I touched the present table."
"What present?" Richard asked.
Noah pointed toward the staircase.
"The red box."
Claudia went completely still.
Richard noticed.
"What was in it?"
Noah shook his head.
"I didn't open it."
Mark spoke too quickly.
"There was no red box."
Richard turned toward him.
"I didn't ask you."
Noah's voice became smaller.
"Mom said if I told anybody, Grandpa wouldn't want me anymore."
Richard closed his eyes for half a second.
When he opened them, the tenderness was gone from his face.
"Why would she say that?"
Noah looked at Claudia.
Claudia's skin had lost its color.
"Because she said the box proved I wasn't supposed to be here."
Richard stood slowly.
Mark moved between him and Claudia.
"Dad, he is confused."
Richard looked past him.
"Daniel."
"Sir."
"Search the lodge for a red box."
Claudia reached for her purse.
Daniel's deputy intercepted it.
"Don't touch my things," Claudia snapped.
Richard looked at the purse.
Then at her.
"Open it."
"No."
That single word changed everything.
Richard had never heard Claudia refuse him so openly.
Daniel stepped forward.
Mark blocked him.
"Nobody is searching my wife's property without a warrant."
Richard remained calm.
"Then she can keep her purse."
Mark blinked.
Richard looked at Daniel.
"But nobody leaves."
Claudia's eyes flashed.
"You said this was about Noah."
"It is."
"Then stop treating us like criminals."
Richard leaned closer.
"If the truth makes you feel like criminals, that is not my problem."
Daniel's phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
"Sir, the exterior backup server came online."
Mark's head snapped around.
Richard saw it.
Daniel continued.
"The lodge cameras upload low-resolution motion clips to an offsite system whenever local footage is changed."
Mark's breathing changed.
Claudia whispered something under her breath.
Daniel opened the first recovered clip.
The image was grainy.
The timestamp showed 6:14 p.m.
Noah stood in the rear corridor wearing socks and holding the wooden airplane.
Claudia appeared behind him.
She seized the airplane from his hands.
The clip had no audio.
But it did not need audio.
Claudia broke one wing against the wall.
Noah reached for it.
She grabbed his wrist.
The clip ended.
Noah stopped breathing for a moment beside Richard.
Richard looked at Claudia.
"That mark on his wrist."
Claudia said nothing.
Daniel opened the next clip.
Mark appeared.
He took Noah by the shoulder.
Then he opened the terrace door.
Snow blew into the hallway.
Mark pushed his six-year-old son outside.
Richard's jaw tightened.
The clip ended.
The next one began twenty-three minutes later.
Noah was still outside.
He was no longer wearing socks.
Richard stared at the screen.
"Where are his socks?"
No one answered.
Noah whispered from the sofa.
"Dad took them."
Richard turned slowly toward his son.
Mark's face had become gray.
"Why?"
Noah's voice cracked.
"Because I kept standing on them."
Richard did not understand.
"Standing on them?"
Noah looked toward the snowy windows.
"The porch was too cold."
Several guests in the library doorway began crying quietly.
Richard did not.
His anger had gone beyond tears.
Then Daniel opened one final recovered clip.
The timestamp was 6:58 p.m.
Mark and Claudia stood in the corridor without Noah.
Claudia held a red box.
She opened it.
Inside was a thick envelope.
Mark pulled out several papers.
Even through the grainy image, Richard recognized the crest printed at the top.
It belonged to his family office.
Mark read the first page.
Then he looked directly toward the terrace where Noah was freezing outside.
He smiled.
Richard's voice became almost inaudible.
"Find that box."
Daniel nodded.
Mark stepped toward the door.
Security stopped him.
Richard watched his son struggle once and then stop.
Whatever was inside that envelope had frightened Mark more than the recovered footage.
And Richard suddenly knew the punishment in the snow had not begun because Noah misbehaved.
May you like
It had begun because Noah saw something he was never supposed to see.
