Chapter 8 - The Receipt

For two days Bea carried the copied receipt as if it were a weight sewn into her coat.

The amount would have changed her mother's life.

It could have paid for better medical treatment, a secure home, and tuition without scholarships.

Yet Bea remembered walking beside Elena to the market on days when even bus fare was impossible.

Why would her mother take the money and keep living in poverty?

Daniel examined the date and found that the payment had been issued before the settlement creating the education fund.

Marisol recognized the account number.

"That wasn't Elena's personal account," she said.

"It belonged to the neighborhood classroom committee."

The receipt's heading had been cut off in the photocopy.

The missing text made the payment look like a private bribe instead of a transfer to the community.

Bea felt her anger change direction.

Someone had deliberately prepared an image that could destroy Elena's reputation if Bea released it without context.

She asked the archivist for the original.

He told her the relevant ledger had been removed years ago on a trustee's order.

Victor had signed the removal slip.

That evening Bea finally opened Elena's letter.

"My dear Bea," it began.

"If you are reading this, I hope you have learned to ask questions even when powerful people tell you the answers should be simple."

Elena wrote about struggling to secure funding for classrooms, about trusting Carmina in the early days, and about being devastated when the project was used for private profit.

She admitted that the fight made her an imperfect mother.

There were afternoons she missed, birthdays she could not afford, and promises she regretted breaking.

But she wanted Bea to know the money was never payment for silence.

"Every peso belonged to the children," the letter said.

Bea wept quietly after Liam had fallen asleep.

She had wanted her mother to be innocent in a story with clear villains.

Instead she found a tired woman who had made brave choices without ever being able to guarantee success.

Daniel called with an unexpected development.

The university board planned an emergency session the following morning.

The meeting's agenda included a motion to suspend Dr. Cruz pending review of his handling of confidential records.
