Chapter 19 - The Apology That Changed Nothing

Carmina looked smaller without an audience gathered around her.

She was dressed plainly, with no glittering jewelry and no photographers beside her.

Bea did not confuse that change with remorse.

They spoke in an empty meeting room with Daniel nearby at Bea's request.

Carmina said her family had become obsessed with its name and influence.

She claimed the first financial decisions were compromises meant to protect the foundation from collapse.

Over time, more compromises had followed.

Bea listened without interrupting.

"I told myself your mother was unreasonable," Carmina said.

"She refused to make things easier."

"She refused to say unfinished classrooms were finished," Bea replied.

Carmina looked down.

"Yes."

She apologized for the words she had spoken at graduation and for insulting Elena.

She also acknowledged that she had known Bea's scholarship rejection had been questioned years earlier and had not insisted on a proper review.

Bea appreciated the admission, but she would not pretend the apology repaired anything.

"You saw my son and called him shame," she said.

"You made my mother sound worthless because she didn't have your money."

Carmina's face tightened with regret.

"I was cruel."

"You were."

Bea waited before continuing.

"I'm not here to forgive you on a schedule that makes you feel better."

"I'm here because I want you to tell the truth wherever the investigators ask you to."

Carmina agreed to provide remaining foundation correspondence to the authorities through her lawyer.

Daniel made clear that cooperation would have to be documented and verified.

When the meeting ended, Bea felt neither victorious nor defeated.

She felt tired.

Outside, Hannah was waiting with Liam, who reached for Bea's face and laughed when she kissed his forehead.

In the weeks that followed, the teaching job became permanent.

The university arranged restitution procedures for other eligible students and committed to public audits.

The old classroom project entered a new review to determine what could safely be completed.

The legal matters involving individual officials continued; Bea stopped measuring her life by each headline.

One evening she placed her mother's photograph beside a picture of herself holding her diploma.

Then she wrote a letter to Liam for the day he was old enough to read it.
