Chapter 15 - THE MOTHER OF THE HEIR

Valeria arrived in Mexico City without Isabella.
That was the first condition she insisted on.
Her daughter would remain in Madrid with Valeria's sister while the adults untangled what they had done.
Renata respected that decision.
She did not mistake it for absolution.
The meeting took place at Mariana's office with Valeria's attorney, Salgado, and a court-approved financial examiner present.
Valeria looked smaller in person than she had on the video screen.
Not weaker.
Just more human.
The fantasy of a glamorous secret woman dissolved when she placed a thick folder on the table and rubbed the red indentation a wedding ring had once left on her finger.
She had never married Alonso.
She had simply spent seven years waiting for a man who promised he would eventually make the hidden life public.
Renata understood the humiliation of waiting for Alonso to become honest.
That did not make them allies.
Salgado began.
"Ms. Cruz, you understand that some transfers you received may be proceeds of fraudulent activity or funds moved through entities under disputed authorization?"
"Yes."
"Are you prepared to identify every account and asset connected to those transfers?"
Valeria looked at her attorney.
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Including the Madrid apartment?"
"Yes."
"Including the education account for Isabella?"
Valeria's face tightened.
"I want her lawful support protected."
"That will be addressed separately."
Valeria nodded.
"Then yes."
Renata watched her closely.
"Why change your mind?"
Valeria turned toward her.
"I did not change my mind about protecting Isabella."
"You changed your mind about protecting Alonso."
Valeria looked down at the folder.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he lied to me again."
Renata almost laughed.
"That finally did it?"
Valeria accepted the bitterness without protest.
"No."
She looked back at Renata.
"What finally did it was realizing he was preparing a second version of the same trap."
Mariana leaned forward.
"For whom?"
"Me."
Valeria opened the folder.
Inside were messages from Alonso sent after the anniversary dinner.
At first he asked Valeria to stay quiet.
Then he asked her to confirm that Renata had knowingly signed the Monte Azul agreement.
Then he asked whether Valeria still had the old email containing Renata's signature page.
Valeria refused.
Alonso's tone changed.
One message read, You accepted the funds, so do not pretend you are outside this.
Another said, If Renata wins, investigators will come for Madrid next.
A third said, You need to remember who protected you.
Valeria pointed to the final message.
"That is when I understood."
Renata read it.
If necessary, we say Valeria managed Monte Azul and misrepresented Renata's consent to me.
Renata looked up.
"He was going to blame you too."
"Yes."
Valeria gave a short laugh.
"Apparently I was only family while I was useful."
Renata did not say what came to mind.
Welcome to the club.
Salgado asked Valeria to describe the arrangement from the beginning.
She spoke for almost two hours.
She met Alonso at university.
They became engaged privately.
When she became pregnant with Isabella, Alonso wanted to marry immediately.
Evangelina refused.
Valeria's father was facing a public investigation involving municipal contracts.
Evangelina believed the association would stain the Ibarra name.
She pressured Alonso to end the engagement and offered Valeria financial support if she stayed out of public view.
Valeria initially refused.
Then threats began.
Family lawyers questioned whether Valeria could support a child alone.
An investigator appeared outside her apartment.
Her father's legal problems worsened.
Finally she moved to Spain.
Alonso promised the separation would be temporary.
"When did Renata enter the plan?"
Salgado asked.
Valeria looked at Renata before answering.
"About a year later."
"What were you told?"
"That Alonso would marry someone acceptable to stabilize the family while old financial problems were restructured."
"Did you know Renata had been selected before meeting Alonso?"
"Not at first."
"When did you learn?"
"After their engagement."
Renata's hands tightened in her lap.
"Did you ask him not to marry me?"
Valeria hesitated.
"No."
The honesty hurt.
"Why not?"
"Because I believed him when he said you understood it was a practical marriage."
Renata stared at her.
"He told you I knew?"
"Yes."
"And you believed that?"
"I wanted to."
Valeria looked ashamed.
"That is not the same as having a good reason."
Mariana let the silence sit.
Then she asked about the Madrid trust.
Valeria explained that Evangelina promised an irrevocable inheritance structure for Isabella once Renata was "removed from the financial picture."
"What did you understand removed to mean?"
"Divorced at first."
"And later?"
Valeria swallowed.
"Charged."
"With a crime?"
"Yes."
"When did you understand that?"
"About eight months ago."
The same period when the contingency file became active.
Valeria opened another message chain.
Evangelina had written, Once R is formally responsible, Alonso can end the marriage without exposing the family to her liabilities.
Valeria replied, Her liabilities or yours?
Evangelina did not answer for two days.
Then she sent one line.
Do not become sentimental now.
Renata stared at the message.
"You knew they were going to blame me eight months ago."
Valeria's eyes filled with shame.
"Yes."
"And you said nothing."
"Yes."
"You let me keep living with him."
"Yes."
"You let me keep going to those fertility appointments."
Valeria looked down.
"I told Alonso to stop that."
"But you did not tell me."
"No."
Renata stood and walked to the window.
She needed distance before anger turned into cruelty.
Below them, people moved along the sidewalk carrying coffee and backpacks.
Ordinary lives.
Ordinary lies, maybe.
But not this architecture of deception.
Valeria spoke behind her.
"I am sorry."
Renata kept looking out the window.
"Do not ask me to make you feel better."
"I'm not."
"Good."
"I know I participated."
"You did."
"I also know Isabella did not."
Renata turned.
"I have never blamed Isabella."
Valeria's shoulders dropped slightly.
"Thank you."
"Do not thank me for refusing to hurt a child."
Renata returned to the table.
"Just help make sure no one else gets used to protect her."
Valeria nodded.
The financial examiner began reviewing the accounts.
Some funds were clearly Alonso's legitimate personal income used for child support.
Other funds came from Monte Azul and related entities with disputed sources.
Valeria agreed to freeze those assets voluntarily while tracing continued.
She also agreed to return control of a brokerage account Evangelina had established.
The account held nearly four million pesos.
"Did you know where that came from?"
Renata asked.
"No."
"Did you ask?"
Valeria met her eyes.
"Not often enough."
Renata understood the answer.
That did not make it acceptable.
Near the end of the interview, Valeria removed her phone.
"There is an audio message I have not sent anyone."
Her attorney stiffened.
"Valeria."
"They need it."
"We discussed providing everything through review."
"And I am providing it."
She looked at Renata.
"Alonso sent this after we fought last year."
"About what?"
"I told him I was tired of waiting."
Valeria pressed play.
Alonso's voice filled the room.
"You think I enjoy this?"
A pause.
"I have to keep Renata calm, keep my father convinced the structure works, keep my mother from changing the plan every month, and keep you from showing up in Mexico City with Isabella."
Another pause.
"Once the refinancing closes, Renata carries what is already in her name."
Renata felt every muscle in her body tighten.
Alonso continued.
"She will fight at first, but the documents make it look like she ran the accounting side."
Then came the sentence that ended whatever part of Renata still wanted to believe her husband had merely been weak.
"When Renata takes the fall, you and I can finally be a family."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Valeria looked down at the phone.
"I saved it because it scared me."
Renata stared at her.
"But not enough to warn me."
"No."
Renata nodded slowly.
There was nothing else to say.
Salgado copied the file under evidence procedures.
When the meeting ended, Valeria lingered near the door.
"Renata."
Renata looked at her.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"Good."
"But if there is any way to keep Isabella out of the public fight..."
"I already told you."
Renata's voice softened slightly.
"I will not use your daughter as a weapon."
Valeria nodded.
"That makes one of us."
She left.
Mariana closed the conference room door.
"How are you?"
Renata sat down.
"Angry."
"Good."
Renata looked at her.
Mariana shrugged.
"Anger is sometimes more functional than guilt."
Renata almost smiled.
Then Salgado's phone rang.
He answered and listened.
His expression changed.
"When?"
A pause.
"Do not touch anything until we get there."
He ended the call.
"What happened?"
"The search team at Las Lomas found Héctor's black notebook."
Renata sat upright.
"The one Mateo mentioned?"
"Yes."
"What's in it?"
"We only have the first photographed pages."
Salgado turned his phone toward them.
One line was circled in red by the evidence team.
A fails - R carries debt - family remains clean.
The date was three years old.
The handwriting was Héctor's.
