Chapter 10 - VALERIA'S COPY

Valeria refused to meet in person.

At 8:00 that evening, Mariana arranged a video call through a secure conference system with Daniela present as a witness.

Renata sat at one end of Mariana's conference table.

The bruise beneath her eye had turned purple at the edges.

She did not cover it with makeup.

When Valeria Cruz appeared on the screen, she looked nothing like the villain Renata had imagined.

She wore a plain cream sweater.

Her dark hair was pulled back.

There was no dramatic jewelry, no perfect makeup, no visible luxury except the room behind her, which appeared to be an elegant apartment overlooking Madrid.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Valeria looked at Renata's face.

"I saw the video."

Renata said nothing.

"Evangelina should not have done that."

Renata almost laughed.

"That is where you want to begin?"

Valeria's mouth tightened.

"I don't know where to begin."

"Try six years ago."

Mariana lifted one hand.

"Before we proceed, this call is being preserved, and no agreement will be made unless it is confirmed in writing through counsel."

Valeria nodded.

"Fine."

"Do you have counsel?"

"Yes."

"Is your counsel aware of this call?"

"Yes."

Mariana leaned back.

"Then show us the document you threatened to release."

Valeria reached offscreen.

She held up a four-page document.

"This is a nominee and investment authorization connected to Monte Azul."

Renata felt her pulse quicken.

"I have never seen that."

"Your signature is on the final page."

"Show it."

Valeria moved the page toward the camera.

Renata recognized her signature immediately.

This one was real.

Her stomach tightened.

"Where did you get it?"

"Alonso sent it to me years ago."

"Why?"

Valeria looked away.

"To prove the structure was protected."

Mariana interrupted.

"Send the full file now."

"No."

"Then this meeting ends."

Valeria looked back at the camera.

"If I send it, I lose the only protection I have."

Renata stared at her.

"Protection from who?"

Valeria laughed softly.

"The same people you are afraid of."

"You were taking their money."

"For my daughter."

"Through companies in my name."

Valeria's expression hardened.

"I did not create those companies."

"But you accepted money from them."

"I accepted what Alonso owed Isabella."

"With my identity attached to the source."

"I did not know that at first."

"At first?"

Valeria went quiet.

Renata leaned forward.

"When did you know?"

"About three years ago."

The answer hurt because it was honest.

"And you kept taking it."

"Yes."

Renata sat back.

"Then do not tell me you are another innocent person in this story."

Valeria's eyes flashed.

"I didn't say I was innocent."

The room went silent.

Mariana watched both women carefully.

Valeria continued.

"I said I was trying to protect my child."

Renata thought of Isabella's photograph.

"Protecting a child does not require framing another woman."

"I never framed you."

"You threatened to release a signature page without context."

Valeria looked down.

"Because the accounts funding Isabella are frozen."

"That is not my decision."

"You started the review."

"They used my name."

"And now my daughter may lose her home."

Renata's anger arrived fully then.

"Do not put that on me."

Her voice did not rise.

That made Valeria look up.

"I did not hide your child."

"I did not send secret payments."

"I did not forge documents."

"I did not tell Alonso to make promises to two women while he used one woman's legal identity to fund the other woman's life."

Valeria said nothing.

Renata continued.

"If Isabella's money is legitimate, your lawyer can prove it and ask the court to protect it."

"It is not that simple."

"No."

Renata's eyes stayed on hers.

"It is not simple because some of the money was not legitimate."

Valeria's face changed.

Mariana noticed.

"How much do you know about the source of funds?"

"I know Alonso used Monte Azul."

"Anything else?"

Valeria hesitated.

"I know Evangelina approved the transfers."

Renata's hands went still.

"How do you know?"

"Because Alonso complained every time she delayed one."

"Do you have those messages?"

"Some."

"Send them."

"Not unless you agree to protect Isabella's trust."

Mariana shook her head.

"We cannot promise protection for funds we have not traced."

Valeria's voice sharpened.

"Then why should I help you?"

Renata looked at her.

"Because Alonso promised to come back to you after I took the fall."

Valeria froze.

That was answer enough.

"Daniela told me."

Valeria closed her eyes.

"Daniela talks too much."

"Did he say it?"

"Not exactly like that."

"Then how?"

Valeria looked toward something offscreen.

Maybe a door.

Maybe a sleeping child.

When she spoke again, her voice was lower.

"He said the marriage was temporary."

Renata swallowed.

"From the beginning?"

"Yes."

"Did you know why he married me?"

Valeria did not answer immediately.

"He said his family needed stability."

"That is not what I asked."

"He said you were clean."

Renata felt the word like a slap.

Valeria continued.

"No debt."

"No family disputes."

"No public profile."

"A professional license."

"Someone banks trusted."

Renata looked down at the conference table.

The same qualities she had once been proud of had been turned into reasons to exploit her.

"Did you know they were putting companies in my name?"

"Not before the wedding."

"After?"

"I knew Alonso had authority to use your signature for some structures."

Mariana interrupted.

"Authority based on what document?"

Valeria held up the nominee agreement.

"This."

"Send it."

"You keep saying that."

"Because I need the whole document, not a page held in front of a camera."

Valeria exhaled.

"If I send it, you agree not to publish my daughter's identity."

Renata answered before Mariana could.

"I never wanted her identity public."

Valeria looked at her.

"Promise."

"I promise I will not release Isabella's name or image to the media."

Mariana added quickly.

"That does not bind investigators, courts, or other parties, and it does not prevent lawful use of documents."

Valeria nodded.

"Fine."

A file arrived two minutes later.

Mariana downloaded it and opened the first page.

The document named Renata as nominal holder of interests in Monte Azul Consulting.

The second page described authority to make investments and open accounts.

The third page contained broad indemnity language.

The fourth carried Renata's genuine signature.

For one terrible second, the Ibarra story looked real.

Then Mariana frowned.

"The footer is wrong."

Renata leaned closer.

"What?"

"Pages one through three show document version 4.2."

She clicked page four.

"The signature page shows version 2.1."

Valeria's eyes narrowed on the screen.

Mariana continued.

"Different font metrics too."

She enlarged the bottom margin.

"And this scan has a different compression pattern."

Renata's heart began to pound.

"Another replaced page?"

"Possibly the opposite."

Mariana turned to Valeria.

"Do you have the email Alonso sent with this attachment?"

"Yes."

"Forward the original email, not a screenshot."

Valeria did.

Mariana examined the metadata.

"He sent this two months after the wedding."

"Yes."

Renata frowned.

"But my signature is from before the wedding."

Mariana nodded.

"Exactly."

She searched Renata's old wedding packet and found another form with an identical scanned signature page.

It was an investment consent for the legitimate Querétaro property transaction.

The signature image matched down to a tiny ink skip inside the letter R.

Mariana placed the two pages side by side.

"They reused your signature page."

Renata stared.

Valeria went pale.

"Alonso told me she signed it."

Renata looked at her.

"He lied to both of us."

Valeria's mouth tightened.

"Do not make us the same."

"We are not."

Renata's voice stayed calm.

"I did not know you existed."

The words landed.

Valeria looked away first.

Mariana saved the file.

"This document may be very useful."

"Then protect Isabella."

"We will identify lawful funds and argue that a child should not be punished for adults' conduct."

Mariana's tone was measured.

"But no one here can promise that tainted money becomes clean because it paid for a child's expenses."

Valeria nodded reluctantly.

Renata watched her.

"Why did you threaten me instead of sending this immediately?"

Valeria's face changed again.

"Because Evangelina told me you were trying to take everything."

"Everything from who?"

"From Isabella."

Renata laughed bitterly.

"Evangelina spent six years saying I could not give the family an heir while she secretly funded the heir she already had."

Valeria's eyes flashed.

"She never accepted Isabella."

"She paid millions for her."

"To keep us away."

The sentence surprised Renata.

Valeria continued.

"The money was not love."

"It was distance."

"She paid for Madrid because she did not want Isabella photographed in Mexico City."

"She sent birthday gifts without cards."

"She called her granddaughter only when Alonso was not around."

Valeria's voice tightened.

"And she told me more than once that if I came back publicly, she would make sure I lost custody."

Renata saw something she recognized then.

Not innocence.

Fear.

The same fear Evangelina cultivated in everyone around her, then called loyalty.

Mariana asked, "Do you have proof of those threats?"

Valeria nodded.

"Some voice messages."

"Preserve them."

"I already did."

The video call should have ended there.

Instead, Valeria leaned toward the camera.

"Renata, there is one thing Daniela does not know."

Renata almost smiled at the familiar phrase.

"What?"

"The night Alonso proposed to you, he called me from the restaurant bathroom."

Renata stopped breathing.

"Why?"

"To tell me the plan was moving forward."

"What plan?"

Valeria swallowed.

"He said the marriage would give his father five clean years to restructure old liabilities."

Mariana began writing.

"Then what?"

"Then Alonso would divorce you."

Renata's voice was almost a whisper.

"And come back to you."

"Yes."

"What was supposed to happen to the liabilities?"

Valeria looked directly into the camera.

"He said they would stay where the signatures were."

Renata knew the answer before she asked.

"With me."

Valeria nodded.

Then she forwarded one final message.

It was an old text from Alonso sent four months before his wedding to Renata.

When this is finished, R carries the paper and we start over clean.

Underneath, Valeria had replied with one question.

Does she know?

Alonso's answer contained only three words.

May you like

She trusts me.
