Chapter 7: The Final Countdown on the Screen

The encrypted video call from Evelyn Bennett blinked onto my tactical terminal with a harsh, glaring light that illuminated the dark, humming server vault.
On the small screen, Evelyn sat in a sterile holding cell, her expensive silk blouse slightly wrinkled, but her expression twisted into a mask of pure, vindictive triumph.
“I told you, Colonel Hart,” Evelyn’s voice crackled through the secure audio channel, dripping with arrogant satisfaction.
“You can freeze our bank accounts. You can arrest our associates. But you can never undo what our family controls.”
I didn't answer immediately.
I kept my eyes fixed on the massive mainframe monitor across the room, where the red digits of the countdown clock continued their relentless march downward: 11 minutes, 42 seconds.
“You built an entire criminal empire on intimidation, extortion, and stolen military data, Evelyn,” I said calmly, stepping closer to the central console while keeping the video feed in my peripheral vision.
“And now you’re sitting in a concrete box watching it all disintegrate piece by piece. You call that winning?”
Evelyn’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her eyes narrowing with sudden venom.
“You think locking me in a cell changes anything? Look at the countdown on your terminal, Colonel. In ten minutes, every classified file linking your precious battalion to corporate sabotage will be blasted across every major news network and dark-web forum in the world.”
She leaned closer to the camera in her holding cell, her voice dropping into a harsh hiss.
“Your career, your honor, and your precious military legacy will be destroyed before the sun comes up. And there is nothing you can do to stop it.”
“You severely underestimate the capabilities of the United States military intelligence apparatus, Evelyn,” I replied smoothly, pulling the portable override cable from my tactical pouch and slamming it directly into the master diagnostics port of the server rack.
Evelyn’s eyes widened slightly in sudden apprehension.
“What... what are you doing?” she demanded, her voice losing its previous composure.
“I am executing a remote system purge,” I said, my fingers flying across the tactical keyboard with disciplined precision as lines of green override code flooded the screen.
“Your automated script relies on an external satellite relay routed through your offshore shell company in the Caymans. But thanks to General Vance, that relay was jammed and redirected to our command servers twenty minutes ago.”
On the main monitor, the countdown clock abruptly froze at 08:15, flickered violently, and then flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson: SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED — DATA WIPED.
Evelyn shrieked in absolute horror on the small screen, slamming her manicured hands against the glass partition of her holding cell.
“No! No, that’s impossible! That server cost millions! It has decades of our family’s security files!”
“It has nothing now,” I said, looking directly into the camera lens with cold, unyielding eyes.
“Your empire is gone, Evelyn. Your son is facing federal prison. Your political allies are under arrest. And your family name is now nothing more than a cautionary tale about what happens when arrogant criminals cross the wrong mother.”
With a sharp tap of my thumb, I terminated the video call, cutting off her frantic screaming in mid-sentence.
The silence in the sub-basement vault returned, broken only by the steady, low hum of the cooling fans as the wiped servers powered down into permanent oblivion.
The team leader stepped up beside me, lowering his rifle with a respectful nod.
“Target neutralized, Colonel. All data streams have been successfully scrubbed and mirrored to our secure military archive.”
“Good work,” I said, turning away from the console.
“Let’s pack up and head back to the medical facility. Emily should be waking up soon, and I want to be there when she opens her eyes.”
As we walked back out through the heavy steel bulkhead doors into the cool autumn night air, the weight of the entire ordeal finally began to lift from my shoulders.
The impossible battle was won.

The Bennett family’s reign of terror in Charlotte was officially over.
However, as our helicopter lifted off the lawn and headed back toward the military hospital, my secure terminal buzzed one final time with a brief, encrypted message from General Vance that hinted at an unexpected postscript to our campaign—one that would ensure the Bennett name was forever erased from the annals of corporate corruption.
