Chapter 10: The Phantom Signal

The unmarked tactical vehicle surged forward, its engine roaring softly as it tore down the interstate toward the industrial sector of Charlotte.

In the backseat, my fingers flew across the secure terminal, tracing the origin of the terrifying intercept message that had just flashed across my screen.

“She has no idea her daughter’s safehouse is currently compromised.”

The words repeated themselves like a rhythmic drumbeat in my skull.

I grabbed the encrypted radio handset, connecting directly to the quick-reaction force stationed back at the military reservation.

“This is Colonel Hart,” I barked into the receiver, my voice razor-sharp.

“Give me an immediate status update on the secure medical facility and perimeter guards assigned to Room Seven.”

A brief burst of static hissed through the channel before the squad leader’s tense voice replied.

“Colonel, we show standard defensive posture. All perimeter checkpoints are locked down.”

“Check the interior telemetry feed right now,” I commanded, a cold spike of panic piercing my chest.

“I received a high-priority intercept indicating a breach of the medical ward.”

Silence stretched across the radio channel for three agonizing seconds.

Then came the sound that made my blood run instantly cold: a sudden, chaotic burst of automatic gunfire echoing through the squad leader’s open comms mic, followed by shouting and the harsh shriek of alarms.

“Contact! Contact! Multiple armed intruders dressed in medical scrubs have breached the trauma wing!” the squad leader yelled over the deafening din of gunfire.

“They’re heading toward Room Seven—!”

The transmission abruptly cut off into a wall of high-pitched static.

“Driver!” I roared, slamming my fist against the partition separating the front cabin from the back.

“Turn this vehicle around immediately! Full emergency lights and sirens! We’ve been set up!”

The driver didn’t hesitate, yanking the steering wheel hard to the left, throwing the heavy tactical vehicle into a high-speed U-turn that squealed against the asphalt.

My mind raced through tactical permutations with blistering speed.

The Orion Syndicate hadn’t panicked when the Bennett empire fell.

They had used the Bennetts as a smokescreen, drawing our attention away from their true objective: eliminating the one witness who knew the full scope of their operations—Emily.

If they laid a single finger on my daughter, I wouldn't just dismantle their safehouse.

I would hunt down every surviving member of the syndicate across the globe and tear their organization apart from the inside out.

As the vehicle raced back toward the hospital at breakneck speed, my secure terminal buzzed with an incoming video feed from the hallway camera outside Room Seven.

The screen flickered to life, revealing a horrific scene of smoke, fallen guards, and three heavily armed operatives wearing black tactical balaclavas standing directly outside my daughter's door, preparing to breach the room.

And as I watched them raise their weapons, a grim, deadly resolve settled over my soul.

They were about to find out why you never back an Army colonel into a corner.
