CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE STUDY

Charles ordered security to take Adrian and Camille into separate rooms.

The authorities were on their way, but Charles refused to wait before checking his study.

Victoria, Elena, Lily, and the head of security followed him upstairs.

The mansion seemed different now.

Minutes earlier, its marble halls had felt grand and untouchable. Now every shadow looked capable of hiding another betrayal.

Charles unlocked the study.

At first, nothing appeared disturbed.

The shelves were perfectly arranged. His desk drawers were closed. The portrait of his late wife still hung above the fireplace.

Then Lily pointed toward the rug.

“Grandpa, that corner is folded.”

Charles moved the rug aside.

Beneath it was a narrow wooden panel.

Victoria stared at him.

“You have a safe under the floor?”

“I did.”

Charles pulled the panel open.

The safe door was already unlocked.

Inside, several folders were missing.

Charles stood perfectly still.

Victoria had never seen her father look afraid before.

“What was in them?” she asked.

“The original trust documents. Property deeds. Records from your mother’s estate.”

Elena noticed a small silver object near the safe.

She picked it up carefully.

It was one of Camille’s earrings.

Victoria closed her eyes.

There was no longer any room for doubt.

Camille had been inside the study.

The head of security checked the camera system on his tablet.

“The study camera was disabled at 7:42.”

“By whom?” Charles asked.

The guard hesitated.

“Your personal access code was used.”

Victoria frowned.

“Only you know that code.”

Charles looked toward Adrian’s empty place downstairs.

“No. Adrian knew it.”

Years earlier, Charles had treated Adrian like a son. He had brought him into the family business, trusted him with financial records, and even discussed making him a company partner.

That trust had given Adrian access to nearly everything.

Lily tugged gently on Charles’s sleeve.

“Grandpa, I recorded something else.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Earlier that evening, Lily had been making a video tour of the mansion for a school project. While walking near the study, she had accidentally recorded Adrian and Camille speaking behind the closed door.

She played the clip.

Camille’s voice came first.

“Once the documents are gone, Charles won’t be able to stop the transfer.”

Then Adrian answered.

“And Elena?”

“She takes the blame for the necklace. Everyone will watch the maid while we leave with the papers.”

Victoria looked toward Elena.

The accusation had not been an impulsive mistake.

It had been the distraction their plan required.

Elena’s humiliation had been carefully designed.

The authorities arrived minutes later.

When confronted with the recording, Adrian immediately tried to protect himself.

“Camille planned everything,” he said. “She promised me a share of the company.”

From the opposite side of the hallway, Camille laughed bitterly.

“You were willing before I ever offered you money.”

Investigators searched Adrian’s car.

Inside the trunk, they found the missing estate documents sealed in a leather case. They also recovered several pieces of jewelry taken from guests during previous gatherings.

Camille had been stealing from the family for months.

Adrian had helped her identify valuable items, disable cameras, and redirect suspicion toward employees.

Elena was not their first target.

Two former housekeepers had been dismissed after jewelry disappeared during family events.

Neither woman had been given a chance to defend herself.

Charles sat heavily behind his desk.

“How many innocent people did I allow this family to destroy?”

No one answered.

Elena stepped closer.

“You didn’t know what they were doing.”

Charles looked at her.

“But I believed accusations without demanding proof. Not knowing is not the same as being blameless.”

Downstairs, Adrian and Camille were escorted through the ballroom.

The guests watched in stunned silence.

Adrian stopped near Victoria.

“I made a mistake.”

Victoria looked at him as though she were seeing a stranger.

“No. A mistake is forgetting a name or missing an appointment. You planned to ruin an innocent woman so you could steal from the people who trusted you.”

He lowered his voice.

“I did it for us.”

“There is no us.”

Camille turned toward Victoria before being led away.

“You always had everything.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“You had a family that loved you. You decided love wasn’t enough because it didn’t make you the center of the room.”

For the first time, Camille had no answer.

As the doors closed behind them, Elena believed the nightmare was over.

Then one of the investigators approached Charles.

“There’s something else you need to know.”

He opened one of the recovered folders.

“The deed to this mansion was never transferred into your name.”

Charles frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

The investigator placed the document on the table.

According to the original trust, the mansion belonged to another person.
