CHAPTER 1 — THE SECOND FIGURE IN THE HALLWAY

The ballroom fell silent as Lily held the phone beneath the chandelier’s warm light.

On the frozen security image, Adrian stood beside Elena’s unattended work bag, his fingers wrapped around Victoria’s diamond necklace.

But he was not alone.

A woman stood in the hallway behind him.

Only half of her face was visible, reflected in the antique mirror near the staircase. She wore a silver evening gown and held a small black jewelry case against her chest.

Victoria stared at the screen.

Her face slowly lost its color.

“No,” she whispered.

Charles looked from the phone to his daughter.

“You recognize her.”

Victoria swallowed hard.

The woman in the reflection was her younger sister, Camille.

Camille had arrived at the gathering two hours earlier, smiling as though she had never spent the past ten years resenting Victoria’s marriage, her home, and her place in the family.

Across the ballroom, Camille quietly stepped backward.

Charles noticed.

“Don’t move.”

His calm voice carried more authority than a shout.

Every guest turned toward Camille.

She forced a confused smile.

“This is ridiculous. You can barely see the woman’s face.”

Lily tapped the screen.

“The video keeps going.”

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

“Lily, give me the phone.”

He moved toward her, but Charles stepped between them.

“You will not go near my granddaughter.”

Lily pressed play.

On the recording, Camille entered the staff hallway after Adrian placed the necklace inside Elena’s bag.

She leaned close to him and said something the camera could not record.

Adrian shook his head.

Camille opened the jewelry case and showed him several other expensive pieces.

Then Adrian nodded.

Elena covered her mouth.

Victoria stared at her sister.

“This wasn’t about one necklace.”

Camille’s smile disappeared.

Charles turned toward the mansion’s head of security.

“Lock the doors. No one leaves until the authorities arrive.”

The guests shifted uneasily as the security team closed the ballroom entrances.

Adrian glanced toward the nearest window.

Charles saw him looking.

“You can run,” Charles said quietly. “But the truth will reach the door before you do.”

Adrian’s shoulders dropped.

For the first time that evening, he no longer looked like the polished young man everyone trusted.

He looked frightened.

Victoria stepped closer to Elena.

“I accused you in front of everyone.”

Elena’s eyes remained wet, but her voice was steady.

“You didn’t ask me one question. You had already decided what I was.”

Victoria lowered her gaze.

Before she could answer, Lily noticed something else in the video.

“Grandpa, wait.”

She rewound the footage and zoomed in on Camille’s jewelry case.

A white label had been attached to the bottom.

Charles leaned closer.

Printed across it was the name of a private auction company.

The date beneath the name was tomorrow morning.

Charles looked at Camille.

“You planned to sell them.”

Camille said nothing.

But Adrian suddenly spoke.

“It wasn’t just jewelry.”

Camille turned toward him sharply.

“Be quiet.”

Adrian ignored her.

His eyes stayed fixed on Charles.

“She took documents from your study.”

Charles’s expression hardened.

“What documents?”

May you like

Adrian looked toward the second floor.

“The ones that prove who really owns this house.”
