CHAPTER 3: THE PROMISE

Three days later, Emily—the little girl Ethan had saved—was recovering quickly.

Her first request surprised everyone.

"Can Ethan visit me?"

Daniel smiled.

Every day after work, he brought Ethan to the hospital.

At first, Ethan barely spoke.

He sat quietly beside Emily's bed, reading books she no longer wanted.

Slowly, the walls around him began to crumble.

One afternoon, Emily handed him a drawing.

It showed two children holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

"That's us," she said.

Ethan stared at the picture for a long time.

Nobody had ever drawn him into their future before.

Meanwhile, Daniel started asking questions.

He learned there were no relatives.

No foster placement.

No permanent address.

Nothing.

The realization haunted him.

One evening, after Emily fell asleep, Daniel found Ethan sitting alone in the hallway.

"You know," Daniel said softly, "heroes aren't always the people everyone expects."

Ethan looked confused.

"I'm not a hero."

Daniel smiled.

"You ran toward danger while everyone else ran away."

The boy stared at the floor.

"I just didn't want another sister to die."

Daniel felt his eyes sting.

At that moment, he made a decision.

A decision that would change all of their lives.

A month later, he filed the paperwork.

Not as a favor.

Not out of guilt.
