Chapter 16 - THE LAST DINNER LIST

The emergency Janus meeting was less than twenty-four hours away.

Victor Vane had chosen the Obsidian because powerful men loved symbols almost as much as they loved money.

The restaurant was still closed after the massacre.

Police tape covered the north hall.

Workers had boarded broken windows.

The city believed it was a crime scene.

Janus intended to use it as a boardroom.

Rafe spread the October transfer list across Isabella's dining table.

Thirty-seven names.

A state senator.

Two judges.

Three police commanders.

Union officials.

Developers.

Bankers.

A hospital executive.

A television station owner.

Several names were already under investigation after the third ledger leak.

Others had never appeared anywhere.

"Victor is not replacing individuals," Daniel said.

"He is replacing the network."

Marian looked at the list.

"He will demand new oaths."

"New accounts."

"New contingency chains."

Evelyn frowned.

"Why gather everyone physically?"

"That is stupid."

Lorenzo nodded.

"Unless he needs something they cannot sign remotely."

Daniel searched the ledger photographs.

"Authentication."

"The October transfer required three legacy signatures."

"Moretti."

"Vane."

"Federal."

Rafe pointed at Lorenzo.

"Shaw tried to get yours at Site 4."

Lorenzo looked at the list.

"If Victor still needs a Moretti signature, I am the reason for the meeting."

Isabella shook her head.

"Salvatore can sign."

Daniel answered.

"Not after he was formally removed from family holdings seven years ago."

"The banks recognize Lorenzo."

"Victor needs him alive."

Evelyn felt a cold certainty.

"That is why Celeste never wanted him dead at the Obsidian."

Marian nodded.

"Shaw changed the attack because he thought eliminating Lorenzo would force the assets into emergency receivership."

"Victor disagreed."

Lorenzo looked at Evelyn.

"I am still a key."

"Welcome to the club."

Rafe leaned back.

"We could let federal investigators raid the meeting."

Daniel shook his head.

"Which federal investigators?"

"Kline was on the replacement list."

"Shaw ran the task force."

"We do not know how deep it goes."

Father Tomas, who had been quietly eating bread, spoke.

"Then sunlight."

Everyone looked at him.

"You people keep building darker rooms and then acting surprised when rats move in."

He pointed at the evidence.

"Put it where darkness cannot survive."

Evelyn understood.

"Live stream."

Rafe frowned.

"From inside the Obsidian?"

"Not just video."

Evelyn stood.

"The documents."

"The audio."

"Victor's meeting."

"Everything released at once to enough places that no single prosecutor can stop it."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"You want to walk into the same room where Celeste tried to use you as a key."

"No."

"I want Victor to think we are doing exactly what he expects."

Daniel's eyes sharpened.

"A transfer ceremony."

Evelyn nodded.

"He needs Lorenzo's signature."

"He needs me because Marian might respond to me."

"He will expect both of us."

"So we give him both."

Lorenzo's expression went hard.

"Absolutely not."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"We have done this scene too."

"This time I mean it."

"You meant it all the other times."

"That is what made it annoying."

Marian watched them with tired amusement.

Isabella did not smile.

"Victor will kill her the moment the transfer is authenticated."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"Your mother died because I thought I could outplay these people from inside."

"I will not watch you repeat it."

Evelyn stared at him.

"You do not get to make this about redeeming yourself."

Daniel flinched.

"I am not trying to."

"Yes, you are."

"You want to protect me now because you could not protect Mom."

"I understand that."

"But I am not twelve."

"I am not a box you hide behind a radiator."

Daniel looked down.

Evelyn's voice softened by a fraction.

"If you want to be my father again, start by believing I can choose."

The room became quiet.

Daniel finally nodded.

"I hate this choice."

"That sounds parental enough."

Father Tomas smiled into his wine.

The plan took shape over the next six hours.

Rafe would install independent cameras in the Obsidian using maintenance access Gilbert still controlled.

Gilbert had recovered enough to help remotely.

He knew every service corridor.

Every utility closet.

Every blind spot.

Marian would release the Janus command archive to five media organizations and three international servers when Evelyn sent a phrase.

Daniel would authenticate the third ledger on camera.

Isabella would contact Moretti captains not named in the ledger and keep them away from the restaurant unless called.

Lorenzo and Evelyn would enter through the front.

Visible.

Expected.

Celeste would be the unknown variable.

Nobody knew whether she would appear.

At 4:00 a.m., Evelyn found Lorenzo alone on Isabella's back balcony.

Snow had begun to fall.

He stood without a coat, looking toward the city.

She handed him one.

"You are terrible at winter."

"I was thinking."

"Dangerous habit."

He put on the coat.

They stood side by side.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Lorenzo said.

"If tomorrow goes wrong, Rafe takes you out through the kitchen."

Evelyn sighed.

"You are incapable of leaving an order alone."

"It is a request."

"Badly disguised."

"Humor me."

She looked at him.

"And who takes you out?"

"I know the building."

"So do I."

"You know service routes."

"Exactly."

"Evelyn."

"Lorenzo."

He gave up first.

"You are impossible."

"You are accustomed to obedience."

"I am beginning to see the flaw."

Snow collected on the balcony rail.

Evelyn looked at him.

"Why did you really agree to marry Celeste?"

He considered the question.

"My mother wanted peace."

"My captains wanted access to Vane construction contracts."

"The city wanted fewer bodies."

"Celeste was intelligent."

"Beautiful."

"Disciplined."

"We understood each other's world."

Evelyn waited.

"That was not my question."

Lorenzo looked down at his hands.

"Because it was easier to marry someone I did not love."

That answer surprised her.

"Why?"

"No leverage."

"No fear."

"If you do not give someone your heart, nobody can use them to reach it."

Evelyn thought of her father disappearing.

Of her mother dying.

Of every person she had kept at a polite distance afterward.

"That sounds lonely."

"It was efficient."

"Same thing in some families?"

He smiled at Rafe's old joke.

Then his expression changed.

"You are leverage now."

Evelyn's breath caught.

"That is romantic."

"I am not trying to be romantic."

"Good."

"You are bad at it."

He stepped closer.

"I am trying to tell you why tomorrow scares me."

Evelyn looked at him.

The most feared man in Chicago was admitting fear in a whisper.

Not as strategy.

Not as manipulation.

Just truth.

She reached for his hand.

His fingers closed around hers.

"You scare me too," she said.

"Because of who I am?"

"Partly."

"And the rest?"

She looked toward the city.

"Because I know exactly who you are and I still came back."

He did not answer.

He leaned closer slowly enough that she could move away.

She did not.

Their kiss was brief.

Careful.

Nothing like the chaos around them.

When they separated, Evelyn kept her forehead against his for one second.

"This changes nothing."

"I know."

"You are still impossible."

"I know."

"And if you order me out of the Obsidian tomorrow, I will ignore you."

"That ruins the moment."

"Good."

A phone rang inside.

They stepped apart.

Rafe appeared at the balcony door.

"We have a problem."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"Of course we do."

Rafe held up the last unregistered phone.

"Salvatore disappeared from federal medical custody twenty minutes ago."

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

"Victor?"

"Maybe."

Rafe shook his head.

"But a nurse found this under his pillow."

He showed them a photograph sent by an inside contact.

A handwritten note.

It contained only six words.

VICTOR DOES NOT KNOW CELESTE SWITCHED SIDES.

Below it was a time.

11:30 P.M.

And a location.

THE OBSIDIAN - NORTH EXIT.

Evelyn stared at the words that had started everything.

North exit.

Lorenzo looked at her.

"Trap."

"Obviously."

"Are we going?"

Evelyn folded the photograph into her pocket.

May you like

"Obviously."
