Chapter 15 - THE REPLACEMENT

Peter Kline entered Site 4 with twelve armed marshals and the confidence of a man who had rehearsed the scene.

Evelyn kept the drive in her fist.

Lorenzo stood half a step in front of her.

Rafe slowly lowered his weapon.

Shaw remained on the floor.

Salvatore leaned against the wall, bleeding from the shoulder.

Kline took in the room.

"Mr. Shaw."

"Are you injured?"

Shaw smiled.

"Nothing serious."

Kline looked at Lorenzo.

"Mr. Moretti, you are under arrest for assaulting a federal officer and escaping custody."

Lorenzo almost laughed.

"I escaped a building wired for demolition."

"We will discuss that downtown."

Evelyn raised her voice.

"This building is not on any federal property registry."

Kline looked at her as if she were a child interrupting dinner.

"Ms. Carter, you have experienced a traumatic event."

"Do not do that."

"Do what?"

"Turn disagreement into confusion."

His expression tightened.

Evelyn held up the drive.

"Your name is on this."

For the first time, Kline's face changed.

Small.

But real.

Rafe saw it too.

Kline extended one hand.

"Give it to me."

"No."

"That evidence may be stolen federal material."

"Then you can request it through a court."

Kline smiled without warmth.

"You have learned some phrases."

"I have also learned what it looks like when someone wants me to hurry."

Lorenzo glanced at her.

She continued.

"So I am slowing down."

Kline's hand dropped.

"Take them."

The marshals moved.

Then every phone in the corridor began ringing.

One after another.

Kline stopped.

Rafe smiled faintly.

"That would be the press."

Evelyn looked at him.

He had done something.

Rafe explained without taking his eyes off Kline.

"When the demolition timer activated, I uploaded a dead-man packet."

"If I did not cancel it within fifteen minutes, three reporters, two judges, and one inspector general got the Site 4 coordinates."

Kline stared at him.

"You did not."

"Check your phone."

Kline checked.

His face went flat.

Outside, sirens approached.

Not one agency.

Several.

News helicopters turned overhead.

Rafe continued.

"Hard to replace everyone at once."

Kline looked at Shaw.

For the first time, Shaw looked uncertain.

Janus worked in darkness and controlled succession.

Too many eyes made replacement messy.

Kline made a decision.

"All weapons holstered."

His own team hesitated.

"Now."

They obeyed.

"Mr. Moretti remains in custody."

"Ms. Carter and Mr. Rafe are witnesses."

"Mr. Shaw requires medical evaluation."

Evelyn almost admired the speed of the pivot.

Kline was rewriting himself in real time.

Salvatore laughed weakly.

"There is Janus."

"Not a conspiracy."

"A reflex."

Kline looked at him.

"You need an ambulance."

"I need a priest."

"You probably need both."

Father Tomas would have enjoyed that, Evelyn thought.

They exited Site 4 into a wall of cameras.

Evelyn walked beside Lorenzo.

Agents tried to separate them.

She refused.

"Ms. Carter, this way."

"No."

"You are not under arrest."

"Then I choose where I stand."

She stood beside Lorenzo beneath the floodlights.

A reporter shouted.

"Evelyn, were you held here against your will?"

She answered loudly.

"Lorenzo was."

Another shouted.

"Who held him?"

Evelyn looked directly toward Shaw as agents brought him out.

"Ask Alexander Shaw why this building had demolition charges."

Chaos erupted.

Kline cursed under his breath.

The public story shattered again.

By morning, Site 4 was under control of the Justice Department Inspector General and an emergency federal judge who had not appeared anywhere in Daniel's ledger.

Shaw was placed under guarded medical detention.

Kline was suspended pending investigation.

Salvatore survived surgery and disappeared into a protected hospital wing before anyone could question him publicly.

Lorenzo was transferred to the federal courthouse under legitimate custody.

His attorneys arrived before sunrise.

Evelyn gave a statement with three lawyers and six cameras outside the room.

She hated every minute.

But she was alive.

That mattered.

At noon, Lorenzo was released temporarily after a judge found the government could not explain the circumstances of his detention.

He walked out through a private courthouse exit.

Evelyn waited beside Rafe.

Lorenzo stopped when he saw her.

"You are still here."

"Disappointed?"

"Surprised."

"I am starting to dislike that word too."

Rafe wisely walked away.

They stood alone in a concrete corridor.

Lorenzo looked exhausted for the first time.

A bruise darkened his jaw.

His wrists were marked by cuffs.

Evelyn touched one before she thought better of it.

He looked down at her hand.

She pulled it back.

"Does it hurt?"

"Less than your slap."

"Good."

He smiled faintly.

Then the space between them became too quiet.

Evelyn remembered his hand catching hers on the Hawthorne roof.

I have you.

She remembered walking into Site 4 because leaving him there had felt impossible.

That frightened her.

"Lorenzo."

"I know."

"You do not know what I am going to say."

"You are going to tell me this changes nothing."

She hated that he was right.

"Your family still did terrible things."

"Yes."

"You have done terrible things."

A pause.

"Yes."

"Saving me does not erase that."

"I know."

"And my father trusting you does not make you good."

"I know."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Stop agreeing."

"Would you prefer I lie?"

"No."

"Then we have a problem."

She almost laughed.

Instead, her eyes burned.

"I do not know what to do with you."

Lorenzo's face softened.

"You do not have to do anything with me."

That was the first gift anyone had offered her in days that did not contain a hidden demand.

Choice.

It hit harder than tenderness.

She looked away.

"What are you going to do when this is over?"

"If it is over."

"When."

He considered.

"My organization is compromised."

"Half the businesses tied to my family exist because Janus protected them."

"Some are legitimate."

"Some are not."

"I have spent my adult life believing control was the only way to keep my mother alive and my people from turning on each other."

He looked at her.

"That theory has performed poorly this week."

"That is one way to put it."

"I do not know yet."

"But I know I am done letting dead men write the rules."

Evelyn thought of Daniel.

"Good."

"The living men are annoying enough."

Lorenzo's mouth curved.

Then he became serious.

"Come somewhere safe."

"That sounds dangerously like an order."

"Invitation."

"Where?"

"My mother's house."

"That sentence is not helping."

"Father Tomas will be there."

"Daniel too."

"Marian."

"Rafe."

"No guns at the table."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"You have to specify that?"

"In my family, yes."

She agreed.

That evening, Isabella's temporary residence became the strangest dinner table in Chicago.

Daniel sat at one end.

Marian sat beside him.

Isabella sat opposite.

Father Tomas poured wine and warned everyone that confession did not count if shouted over pasta.

Rafe guarded the door.

Lorenzo sat beside Evelyn.

For twenty minutes, nobody discussed Janus.

It almost felt normal.

Then Marian's phone rang.

Celeste.

Every person at the table went still.

Marian answered on speaker.

"Where are you?"

Celeste's voice was calm again.

Too calm.

"I saw the news."

"Shaw is contained."

"Kline is exposed."

"Salvatore is injured."

"You sound disappointed," Lorenzo said.

"I am impressed."

Celeste paused.

"Evelyn?"

"Here."

"You saved him again."

"Apparently I need a worse hobby."

Celeste almost laughed.

Then she said.

"You still think Shaw is the head of Janus."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Is he not?"

"No."

"Shaw is the replacement."

Marian went pale.

"Replacement for who?"

Celeste's answer came softly.

"Victor."

Her father.

The man everyone believed was dying.

"Victor Vane is not dying," Celeste said.

"He is not even in Chicago."

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

"Where is he?"

"On his way back."

"Why?"

Celeste's voice turned cold.

"Because Site 4 failed."

"And because tomorrow morning, every person on the October transfer list is coming to Chicago for an emergency meeting."

Rafe asked.

"Where?"

Celeste laughed once.

"The Obsidian."

The room went silent.

The restaurant where everything began.

"Midnight tomorrow," Celeste continued.

"Victor is going to replace every exposed branch of Janus at once."

"Shaw."

"Kline."

"Salvatore."

"Maybe me."

Evelyn asked.

"Why tell us?"

Celeste did not answer immediately.

Then she said.

"Because my mother is listening."

Marian closed her eyes.

Celeste continued.

"And because I finally know the answer to the question I asked her."

"What question?" Evelyn asked.

"Whether I became my father."

Her voice broke slightly.

"Not yet."

May you like

The call ended.
