Chapter 13 - THE DAUGHTER GRANT INVENTED

Rebecca warned me not to mistake Sloane's latest confession for a reliable account.

"She may be frightened," Rebecca said. "She may also be trying to redirect blame."

I wanted to believe Sloane for the first time in my life.

Wanting was not knowing.

Nathan explained that the shipping manifest came from an old box of family papers Sloane had brought to their apartment.

Miriam Caldwell had been listed as a beneficiary of a company insurance policy, but no one in the family had ever mentioned her.

Further records revealed that Miriam was Grant's sister, a bookkeeper who had disappeared from his business after a dispute over accounts.

She was not Sloane's birth mother, as Nathan initially feared.

The true surprise was that Miriam had documented suspicious transactions years before Dad died.

She had written to Daniel Bennett warning him of what she called a second set of books.

Grant publicly claimed his sister was a disgruntled employee with a history of dishonesty.

But a former accountant remembered Miriam as painstaking and principled.

Miguel located her at a coastal town hundreds of miles away.

She agreed to speak only if we came without cameras or reporters.

Miriam met us in a quiet diner.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair and hands that never rested completely still.

"You look like Daniel," she told me.

I had heard that before, but this time it felt less like comfort than responsibility.

Miriam explained that she had found fake invoices funding a network of shell companies.

She had given copies to Dad.

After his death, Grant accused her of stealing and threatened criminal charges unless she left town.

"Why didn't you report him?" Nathan asked.

"I tried," she said. "The records vanished before anyone examined them. I could never prove who took them."

She reached into her bag and produced a yellow envelope.

"But Daniel asked me to keep a list of people who attended the last North Quay meeting."

Four names were written inside.

Daniel Bennett.

Grant Caldwell.

A contractor named Victor Raines.

And Marlene Bennett.

I stared at the fourth name.

"My mother told police she never attended."

Miriam nodded slowly.

May you like

"Then your mother has not told you her first true story yet."
